What The First Lady's Fashion Choices Say To The World

The First Lady's role has always been hard to define. She's not an elected official, but she's just as prominent a figure for the country as many elected leaders. She has no official job, but has many ceremonial duties that put her front and center. Over the years, her choice of wardrobe has become part of her message, not just to the American people, but to the world.

Jackie Kennedy really set the bar when it came to FLOTUS fashions. Her tailored suits became her 'uniform'. Her chic but casual styles, usually revolving around smart wardrobe fundamentals, made her look cool yet approachable.

Even Jackie's choice of designers had a purpose. When she met with French President Charles de Gaulle, she wore clothes by the Givenchy, a French designer. This is a great way for the First Lady to pay respect to another culture.

Michelle Obama, a fashion icon in her own right, did the same thing. When Michelle went to other countries, she always made it a point to feature designers from those countries in her wardrobe.

Kate Andersen Brower told CNN, "Michelle Obama was brilliant at this — she wore an Indian-American designer to the India state dinner, all British designers on a trip to London, and Kenzo in Tokyo."

Brower wrote, 'First Women: The Grace and Power of America's Modern First Ladies.'

Mrs. Obama also had a great style that made her very relatable to the average working woman and mom. She did wear a few high fashioned pieces in her time, but she often mixed them with garments from Target or J.Crew. She matched her wardrobe choices to the occasion beautifully, whether she was dressed to the nines for a White House formal dinner, or donning jeans and a leather jacket to pass out candy on the White House lawn at Halloween.

Melania Trump has her own sense of fashion, and while there is nothing particularly wrong with Melania's stunning taste, her clothing says something different. Perhaps it's because she was a high fashion model, or perhaps it's because she was a billionaire living in a gold-gilded penthouse before coming to the White House, but Melania often seems a bit overdressed. For example, when she boarded Air Force one on her way to comfort Hurricane Harvey victims, she wore extremely high stiletto heels.

At a 4th of July picnic on the White House lawn with military families, the FLOTUS donned a $1,500 electric blue Esteban Cortázar dress. Most families can't relate to a $1,500 dress for a casual picnic.

While abroad, her fashion choices are, again, stunning, but seem more about her and less about her role as First Lady. When visiting China in a recent trip to Asia, Melania wore an embroidered Gucci version of a cheongsam. Lovely as it was, it was noticed that she opted not to wear something from a Chinese designer.

Perhaps it’s part of Melania’s revenge. She had so many designers swear not to dress her because they disagree with her husband that she’s seemed to be on a mission to prove she doesn’t need them to look great. But her wardrobe seems to scream ‘Look at what I’m worth’ to the American people rather than ‘I’m one of you’.
