While Obama Enjoys The Golf Course, Michelle Seen Checking Out Tourist Attractions In Tuscany

Barack and Michelle Obama apparently had different priorities for the beginning of their six-day vacation in Tuscany on Saturday, as the former president played golf while his wife went sightseeing.

According to the Daily Mail, nearly 70 miles of Italian countryside separated the former first lady from her husband when she traveled to Montalcino. The news site described her outfit as “an off-the-shoulder pink top, with white ripped jeans and white sandals.” Michelle Obama was not alone, of course, because she always has security protection. She seemed to be having a great time, laughing and smiling, while visiting the hillside town. She chowed down on some Italian gelato and admired the scenery, which includes sprawling vineyards and villas.

The ex-president went to the Castiglion del Bosco golf course, where he drove a golf cart with obvious delight. During his eight years in the White House, he never had an opportunity to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Castiglion del Bosco is the only private golf club in Italy that sits within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to its website. Former PGA star Tom Weiskopf designed the course, which admits new members by invitation only.

The former first couple reunited later in the day at a resort in Borgo Finocchieto (“village of fennel fields”) that they rented for $15,000 per night. They likely did not have to pay the fee because the club’s owner is John Phillips, whom Obama appointed as U.S. ambassador to Italy. Government law-enforcement officers known as the Polizia di Stato and the Carabinieri prevented anyone from entering the six-acre resort, which is about a 15-minute drive from the golf course and 45 miles south of Florence.

The facility features 22 bedrooms in five buildings, a large library, gym and fitness room, steam rooms, saunas and jacuzzis, two dining rooms and outdoor eating areas, a wine-tasting room and wet bar, tennis courts and a bocce court. The former president probably was most interested in the basketball courts. Nearby are old castles, mansions, villages and other attractions. According to La Cure, the nightly cost for a nine-bedroom package at the resort is $7,000. For all 22 bedrooms, the price tag is $15,200, with a three-night minimum stay.

The Obamas traveled to Tuscany on a private flight accompanied by a half-dozen military jets. They moved about the country in a 13-vehicle procession, as crowds stood along the roads to cheer them.
