Fox News Host Is Stunned By Trump Spokesman’s Remark About White House Tapes

Even Fox News is concerned about the Trump administration refusing to explain the president’s suggestion that he might have “tapes” of White House conversations.

According to Yahoo News, the television network’s Chris Wallace criticized White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s response to a question about a Trump tweet on Friday. The president, referring to the FBI director he had fired earlier in the week, wrote: “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”

Reporter Jeff Mason asked Spicer whether there were recordings of Trump and Comey talking in the Oval Office. The press secretary replied: “The president has nothing further to add on that. That’s not a threat; he simply stated a fact. The tweet speaks for itself.”

That prompted Wallace to tell another Fox News host, Shepard Smith: “When I heard that exchange today between ... a White House reporter and Sean Spicer speaking from the podium in the briefing room for the president of the United States, it took my breath away. He was asked specifically, ‘Is there a recording device in the Oval Office of the president of the United States?’ He said, ‘I have nothing for you on that.’”

Wallace made comparisons to the Watergate scandal of the early 1970s, which led to President Nixon’s resignation. The commentator argued that Spicer’s comment “was what in Watergate they called a non-denial denial,” adding: “He could have said ‘no.’ He could have said ‘yes.’ He said ‘I have nothing for you on that.’ Look, it may just be that the president is trolling the press corps and saying ‘work yourself into a frenzy about all this’ and turns out it’s nothing. But why would he do that? Why would he want to decrease the credibility which is already in question of this White House and comments that are made from that podium? It seems to me that you’re playing a very dangerous game with the currency of the credibility of the president of the United States.”

This week, Comey released a memo describing his conversation with Trump at the White House in February. According to the former FBI chief, the president pressured him to end the bureau’s investigation of Michael Flynn, who lost his job as national security adviser that month.

Flynn had contacts with Russia’s ambassador to the United States last year before Trump took office. The retired general allegedly promised the ambassador that the new administration would remove sanctions that President Obama imposed on Russia as punishment for interfering with the U.S. election in 2016.
