Friends Dish Out Secrets On What Obama Really Thinks Of President Trump

It’s no secret that tensions run pretty high between President Donald Trump and his predecessor, Barack Obama. While the pair was able to see past their differences to ensure a smooth transition of power, all bets were off once Trump assumed the role of commander-in-chief. Trump has delivered some not-so-subtle jabs at Obama since then, but the former president has stayed above the fray for the most part. As you would expect, he feels no need to bite his tongue in private.

As the Daily Mail shares, two friends of Obama have opened up to People magazine about the dynamic at play between the two powerful men. Let’s just say that Obama feels that Trump has a tortured relationship with the truth.

“He's nothing but a bulls****er,” Obama has said about Trump, according to one friend.

Despite his concerns that Trump may not be the most forthright person in the world, the friends say that Obama is at least somewhat pleased with some of the things he’s seen in the wake of Trump’s election.

“He’s deeply concerned with what he’s seen. But he’s also optimistic and heartened that citizens aren’t just watching it happen but engaging with neighbors and elected representatives at town halls,” shared one of the friends.

As his predecessors have done before him, Obama has mostly stayed out of the way so that Trump can do his thing. Whether he agrees with what’s going on or not doesn’t matter, as he sees the changing of the guard as a routine part of our Democracy. David Axelrod, a longtime friend of Obama, echoed those sentiments while sharing some recent thoughts.

“He’s very respectful of the appropriate role of a former president and that ex-presidents should not be looking over the shoulder of their successors and commenting on every decision,” Axelrod said. “President Obama’s predecessor didn’t do that. Obviously, this now is a unique set of circumstances, but my sense is that he’s going to try and respect that tradition while reserving the right to speak out in given moments when things rise to that level.”

Those hoping that Obama will get all riled up and speak out about Trump or his policies will likely be sadly mistaken, as that would be going against a ton of protocol. However, that doesn’t mean the former president will not continue to vent in private.
