Vogue Editor Reveals Something Interesting About Melania’s Manners

Contributing Vogue editor and former ‘America’s Next Top Model’ judge André Leon Talley sat for an interview with Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan on Wednesday. The two chatted about First Lady Melania Trump, her style decisions since she’s been in office and how she’s doing as a first lady in general.

Talley once worked for Melania, a former model, when he acted as fashion consultant to help her find a wedding dress. "I loved my dress. I had a great time in Paris, I went with my great friend André Leon Talley. He's an amazing man and we went to Paris for one week to the shows," Melania said to Larry King in a 2005 interview.

Apparently, the feeling is not mutual. If there ever were any warm feelings Talley had toward Melania, that all ended with her husband’s campaign.

When asked now about his former business relationship with Mrs. Trump, Talley tells Givhan very adamantly, “That was then.”

The fashion icon admits that he has to give credit where credit is due, and Melania deserves credit for her style. He loved her powder blue Ralph Lauren suit Melania wore to the inauguration, for instance.

When asked about Mrs. Trump’s outfits, Talley responded, “Melania is very selective and she chooses her looks carefully, and there's obviously a great deal of preparation for the looks. I think that she is indeed a very, very confident person and she chooses carefully for the clothes that look great on her. And it is always her choice."

What’s also her choice is staying with her husband and supporting his politics, either by backing him vocally or by remaining silent behind the scenes. Melania was on board with the whole ‘birther’ conspiracy theory pushed by Trump, and her silence as her husband steamrolls over progress made over the last eight years makes her complicit.

Talley might not be able to say anything nice about Mrs. Trump personally, especially in light of her husband’s administration and her role in it. But he did give Mrs. Trump credit for having ‘impeccable’ manners.

"When I helped her with her wedding trousseau, it was an assignment from Vogue and I flew with Melania. ... She went to all the great couture houses, and the great thing about Melania is her manners. She was very impressive that the couture houses were very impressed that she was not the arrogant Mrs. Trump ... She was so impeccable in her manners, in the way she spoke to people and she was so charming."

Melania ended up choosing a stunning John Galliano Dior dress that reportedly cost $230,000.

"I can only say that was then. And then I saw Melania a bit after she was married and I've lost contact with her, so that was then," Talley reiterated to the host.

Mr. Talley had told the New York Times before in an interview that he broke ties with the Trumps and wanted nothing more to do with them. “You make the choice to be in Trumpland or you make the choice to eject yourself from the horror of Trumpland. I’ve made my choice not to be part of Trumpland.”

A lot of people in the fashion industry have felt the same. Since Trump won the 2016 election, a number of designers have banned together and refused to work with Melania at all.
