Farm Cartoonist Fired After 21 Years Because One Comic Offended A Reader

Something a cartoonist said in his weekly drawing offended a major advertiser. Next thing the artist knew, he was out of a job.

Rick Friday has been drawing a weekly cartoon for 'Farm News' 21 years. They've published more than a thousand of his cartoons. After Friday said something critical of big farm supply companies in his drawing, his entire career was over in an instant.

The cartoon in question featured two farmers standing around talking. "I wish there was more profit in farming," one said.

"There is. In year 2015 the CEOs of Monsanto, Dupont Pioneer and John Deere combined made more money than 2129 Iowa farmers," the other responded.

One of the companies mentioned took offense to the remark, and reportedly pulled their advertisements with the publication. Friday's editor was reprimanded, and Friday was fired.

According to Morningstar data, The CEOs at the large agricultural companies earned about $52.9 million last year, reports the Des Moines Register.

While publisher Larry Bushman was unable to say why Farm News decided to no longer run Friday's cartoons, the Farm News editor refused to comment on the decision.

"I did my research and only submitted the facts in my cartoon," said Friday. "That's okay, hopefully my children and my grandchildren will see that this last cartoon published by Farm News out of Fort Dodge, Iowa, will shine light on how fragile our rights to free speech and free press really are in the country."
