Armed Robbers Jumped In Elderly Woman's Car, Forced Her To Drive To Bank And Withdraw Money

On Saturday afternoon, an elderly woman was out running errands when armed robbers attacked her in her vehicle. The thieves forced the woman to go to the bank and get out money for them. The robbers ended up fleeing on foot. Thankfully, the woman was not harmed. Police are on the lookout for the suspects.

The unnamed 81-year-old woman was out of her car in the city's Lathrom Homes neighborhood in a shopping center shortly after noon. She says a man and a woman approached her. The couple, who she says looked Hispanic, began asking the elderly woman for assistance, and the situation escalated.

The two followed the woman to her car. One of the suspects was armed, and they forced the woman to let them in. They then directed her to drive to her bank. When she got there, the robbers waited outside while the victim went in to withdraw money for them.

The victim obeyed the orders to go into the bank and withdraw money. She then went back outside and handed the money to the couple. They ran from the scene.

The woman called police. Thus far police have not put out a description of the culprits. There have been no other similar attacks.

"I'm just getting all worried about what’s going on in the area, there are so many robberies going on, it's like you're not safe anymore," said one local to WGN9 News. "I'm just worried, I'm scared and that's why sometimes I don't even want to go outside."

"We're always hearing in the news that we should be aware of what’s going on in the neighborhood. I think we should be more aware and learn from that," the woman added.

It’s bad enough when two thugs decide to rob anyone, but when they prey on vulnerable people like the elderly, it’s outrageous. According to the Chicago Tribute, the city's growing problem with violence is of particular concern to their elderly residents. Some senior citizens have said they avoid going out if they can at all help it.

"I just want to hide," said one woman who had been mugged and endured several burglary attempts.

Her sister, however, takes an entirely different position. The 71-year-old knows the risks, but she's not going to let it stop her from living her life. She still attends a lot of activities, such as a nightly swim class.

"I probably need to be (more concerned), but I'm not," she said. "I'm not going to put that on my mind. Fear can be smelt."

Throughout the nation, crimes against the elderly increased significantly between 2003 and 2013, reports the Bureau of Justice Statistics. It didn't even take homicides into account.

In Chicago, however, the crime rate has reached alarming heights in recent years. With the baby boomers becoming seniors now, the elderly have become the most vulnerable targets for thieves.
