Black Man Went Into Walgreens for Diabetes Care Products, But Store Employees Called Cops

A Walgreens store in St. Louis, Missouri has been accused of racial profiling. The staff reportedly called police on a black man when he came into the store. He was accused of stealing high-end beauty products, but the man said he was just there to purchase products for diabetes. The young man is embarrassed, and his family is outraged.

Wesley Dozier, who served three years in the Air Force Academy as a teen, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He has been using an insulin pump ever since then to help manage the disease. Pumps take the place of syringes for some diabetics by giving the person a steady supply of insulin.

"This pump is very important to me because it makes it that way so I don't have to give myself shots," he said.

Because the pump has to be hooked up to the skin, however, it can sometimes cause some scarring. This was a problem with which Dozier was struggling, so he walked into the Walmart on Monday night to get some cream to help with the scarring.

Dozier browsed the store for a while, but he was shocked when employees accused of stealing some expensive cosmetics. A few minutes later, police arrived. Staff had called them, and Dozier was promptly searched.

The search turned up nothing-- Dozier didn't have any stolen goods on him. Still, instead of being given an apology, he was asked to leave the store.

Police in St. Louis said they went to the store when they got a report of a suspicious person, but that no report was filed and no one was arrested.

Dozier is shocked. The young African-American man believes he was a victim of racial profiling. "I’ve never stolen anything in my entire life," he said. "I just simply want to feel comfortable in my own skin."

"I would like to see some sort of action take place as far as identification of those who steal from their stores," Dozier added in an interview with NBC's local affiliate.

Walgreens issued a statement, saying, "First and foremost, we firmly believe everyone should be welcome and treated with respect at our stores, and we'll continue working to make sure that happens. Our policies strictly prohibit any form of discrimination or racial profiling, and any such occurrence will not be tolerated. We take this matter very seriously and continue to look into it."

This isn’t the first time someone has accused Walgreens of racial profiling, however. Two women who were shopping for beauty products in a store in Miramar, Florida were shopping for beauty products say they were stopped and accused of stealing. The employees asked to search their bags, and the women consented. Not stolen items were found, but the women said they were humiliated.

“This was one of the most traumatic things I have been through,” said Crystal Davis, one of the accused women. “And I have been through a lot. It was so humiliating that words cannot describe it. I saw my life flashing through my eyes. I was made to feel like a criminal. It was horrible. I hope no one else will ever have to go through anything like this.”
