Black Student Humiliated When Teacher Addresses Her With N-Word

Destinee Wornum, 16, said she was humiliated and embarrassed when a teacher greeted her with "what's up my n****." The English teacher, at Boston Latin School, made the greeting during an English class discussion of Huckleberry Finn.

The student said she was initially afraid to come forward because she worried it may impact her grades and standing at the elite school.

She gained the courage to tell her mother when fellow students started a social media campaign in January to highlight racial issues.

Her mother, Rosalind Wornum, was outraged. She has since met with headmaster Lynn Mooney to get the English teacher fired.

In a recent interview, Rosalind Wornum, 49, said "That [statemnt] was cultural incompetence. What was she expecting from making that statement to her? Is it standard process in addressing the book?" After the teacher asked Destinee the question, she then demanded to know, "how does that make you feel?"

Destinee told the Boston Globe, "I didn't know what to say. I feel like if she wanted to make a point about the n-word, there's always a different way to go about it. She didn't have to direct it to me and make me feel uncomfortable like that."

Rosalind said, "(It) gives the white students more reason to act out because they see it's OK." Headmaster Teta condemned the English teacher's use of the n-word, and apologized for not addressing racial incidents at her school earlier. She told the Wornums that the issue is being dealt with by the Office of Equity.
