Community Up In Arms As Girl Faces Punishment At School For Donating Hair To Charity

A young teenage girl from Mount Bay Academy in Penzance, England, has been excluded from classes and put into ‘isolation’ after she shaved off her hair in order to donate it to a children’s wig charity, the Little Princess Trust, which is a trust for kids who are suffering from cancer.

Niamh Baldwin, 14, was commended by her family and friends for her brave sacrifice, however, the administrators at her school have scorned her for the decision, excluding her from classes and from seeing her friends.

Anneka Baldwin, Niamh’s mother, took to Facebook to express her outrage after her daughter was kept in isolation at school for shaving off her hair for a children’s wig charity. “Niamh recently shaved all of her hair off to donate to a children’s wig charity,” Ms. Baldwin began in the emotional post.

“I think this is the most courageous and amazing thing to do and makes me so proud. That’s why I am so upset that the school has made her feel so low and put her into isolation.”

Niamh is also forbidden from seeing “her peers in the playground.” According to Ms. Baldwin, Mount Bay Academy kept Niamh out of her classes because she was not following the school’s policy that requires all students to have at least one centimeter of hair.

According to Ms. Baldwin, Niamh is a top student; she receives excellent grades and raving evaluations from all of her teachers. “Niamh has always had outstanding reports and feedback from all of her teachers and everyone she meets always say she is a polite and lovely girl,” Ms. Baldwin wrote.

“This doesn’t change because of a hairstyle; to me it is discrimination.”

The principal of Mount Bay Academy, Sara Davey, pointed out to Ms. Baldwin that the school’s policy on shaved haircuts was “very clear,” and that Niamh must wear a headscarf until her hair grows back.

“All students know this is the school policy and they also know that the consequence is to complete school work in the inclusion room until the hair grows so that it is no longer extreme,” Ms. Davey wrote. “If Niamh had asked the school about shaving her hair for charity then this would have been pointed out and an alternative fundraising idea would have been suggested.”

The charity manager, Monica Glass, also spoke up about the issues, telling ‘MailOnline.com’ that while they are incredibly grateful for Niamh’s donation, they also understand the school’s point of view:

“We know that receiving a free real hair wig has a profoundly positive effect on the sick children and young adults that we assist and it is only thanks to our kind supporters that this is possible. We try to steer our hair donors away from actually shaving their heads, as to donate one's hair is already such a huge sacrifice."

The statement continued, "The establishment has requested that anyone under the age of 16 and who are thinking about donating their hair, to obtain permission from their parent/guardian beforehand. We are very saddened to learn of Niamh's situation and equally wholly understand the standpoint of Mounts Bay Academy."

"We sincerely hope that the matter can be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved.”
