Dad Arrested After Leaving Daughter Alone In Desert And Driving Off

One woman came across a shocking sight in the middle of the desert. Now, a man is in jail.

A father and daughter were in his car and the two got into a heated argument over a pen. The father dropped the girl off in the middle of the day in the Mojave Desert and left her there.

The child had no water, no shoes, and temperatures were already climbing up into the 90's. As the girl tried to figure out how to make her way home, the dad went back to the house to take a nap.

Christopher Charles Watson, an Arizona man, was driving with his 10-year-old daughter through the desert. Apparently, she put his pen back in the wrong place, and things spiraled out of control from there.

The girl says her father bit her and hit her on the head before throwing her out of the car altogether.

“She placed the pen in the driver’s seat, and he wanted it in a certain spot and apparently, she didn’t put it in the correct spot,” said Trish Carter, an employee of the Mohave County Sheriff's Office.

“She [the girl] said he got angry with her and he put her in the car and drove at a high rate of speed onto a dirt road into the desert.”

After her father sped off, the girl started walking alone down the road. Another motorist spotted the crying, barefoot girl walking in the heat by herself.

"[The woman] asked the little girl why she was crying and she said that her dad left her," said police.

The motorist called authorities, who went looking for the 28-year-old dad. They found him at his home, sleeping and reeking of the stench of alcohol.

Watson told the police he went home and waited 15 minutes before returning to the spot where he dropped her off, but she wasn't there.

He says he searched for two hours, but when he couldn't find her, he decided to go home and take a nap. He was hoping the girl would turn up on her own. If not, he had planned to call police to report her missing.

“After looking for her for two hours, he went home and took a nap,” Carter says. “And he hoped she would show up at home, and if not, he would start calling for help.”

The dad told police that when they argue, he normally takes her for a drive because it calms her down. This time, though, it didn't work.

Watson told police the girl hit her head on the car window when he pushed her to get out. He says when he told her to get out at first, she refused, and his daughter swore at him.

The child was brought to Kingman Regional Medical Center for treatment. Later, she was released into the custody of the Department of Child Safety.

Police arrested Mr. Watson and charged him with felony child abuse.

“It is fortunate this kid didn’t end up in the wrong hands of someone,” Carter says. “There are many predators out there these days. Luckily we didn’t have a major, sad ending.”
