Dad Says He Was Shamed By Woman For Using Parents' Room In Shopping Center

A mom in Australia was in a huff because she went into a parents' room-- a room set aside for parents to change diapers and feed children-- and found a man in there. She ordered him to leave and threatened to call security if he did not. The man was baffled, because he was in the middle of feeding his infant daughter at the time.

The father was shopping with his children at the Westfield North Lakes in Brisbane when his 6-month-old baby girl needed a diaper change. The man, known only as Chris, went into the parents' room to change the diaper. Afterwards, the baby was hungry. The dad took a chair and began to feed the baby.

The room was set aside as a convenient place for parents to change diapers, breastfeed or otherwise take care of a baby's needs. While Chris was feeding his daughter, another woman came in with her toddler. The woman told Chris he wasn't supposed to be in the room and demanded he leave.

Chris shared his story on the radio show 2DayFM with hots Em, Grant and Ed.

"So I changed her nappy first and then sat down in one of the allocated seats in the corner of the room and I just started feeding her," he said.

"I was probably half way through feeding her when another lady came in with her daughter who was probably between two and three years old. She looked around the room first, saw me in the corner, she lifted her baby up to start changing her, then she moved her to the other side of the room to continue changing her."

Chris wasn't paying the woman much mind. He was too busy taking care of his own baby, but he could hear her huffing and puffing. He assumed she was just having a bad day, or that her child was giving her a hard time. Finally, though, the woman confronted Chris.

"You're not allowed to be here," she told him, Chris said.

Chris said he looked up in confusion to find the woman staring at him. "I wasn't even looking at her or anything. I just looked up, and I just went 'excuse me?' and she just went: 'you're not allowed to be here'," he recalled.

"I said 'but isn't this a parents room?' and she goes 'yes, you're making me feel uncomfortable' and I went 'okay... well I changed my baby in here and now I'm feeding her. She's six months old, this is what this room is supposed to be for'," he explained.

"You're making me feel uncomfortable, and if you don't leave, I'll go and call security," the woman said, as Chris recalls it.

Chris didn't want any trouble so he began packing up his things. He and the lady kept arguing when another woman came in with a child. She asked what was happening.

"Oh the other lady said I'm not allowed in here," Chris told her as he exited.

"No, that's wrong," she said. Next thing he knew, the two women began arguing over his presence.

"As I got out the door, the second mum said to me 'no, come back in. This is ridiculous'. So I turned around and went back in," he explains.

Both moms finished changing diapers and left, and Chris was the last one in the room to think about what just happened.

"Sometimes those rooms have toilets in them so I prefer to take my girls there rather than take them into the men's bathroom. It's often the only solution," he said. "But I'm really mindful that's also a breastfeeding area so I don't want to occupy the room for someone who might need to come in and feed."

The host asked Chris what the woman meant by him making her feel uncomfortable, and Chris responded, "I absolutely have no idea. One of the biggest things I first thought of was, Am I not allowed to be in here with my child?"

According to the Westfield North Lakes told Daily Mail Australia, he is. The parents' rooms are for parents, not just mothers. All 'carers and guardians' are welcome to use them with children .
