Delta Passengers Stranded At Airport, Served Pizza, Snacks By Delta Employees

Terrible thunderstorms in Atlanta resulted in a number of flights being grounded, and a lot of unhappy travelers being stranded. Delta saved the day by generously buying everyone dinner.

It was a busy day for a couple of Atlanta pizza shops when Delta ordered some 600 pies for their stranded travelers.

Photos from people at the airport show pizza boxes stacked in piles at the gates, with hungry would-be passengers digging in.

"Love Delta airlines! Serving pizza to delayed passengers at Norfolk International!" said a Twitter user.

It was lunchtime, and the pies were ordered from Dominos and Chanellos to help make the wait a little less frustrating. On one plane stuck on the tarmac, passengers were delighted when the pilot himself came out and began passing out the slices.

Many airline employees pitched in to help distribute and spread good cheer.

"Our @Delta captain delivering pizza while we are stranded waiting for Atl storm chaos to pass. Amazing!" said another tweet.

If you think it’s an isolated incident, you’d be wrong. Buying food when planes are grounded has been going on for a few years, and is becoming a common practice, as it turns out.

"Airport station managers had the idea a few years ago, during severe weather, to order pizza for delayed customers," said airline spokesperson Morgan Durrant to CNN. "It has become one of our go-to tactics during severe weather."

Many of the grounded travelers seemed to very much appreciate the small treat. Durrant explains that while airlines can't control the weather, they can do things to help make passengers more comfortable and happy.

According to Michael Thomas, another Delta spokesperson, the airline has treated stranded fliers in Nashville to foot-long subs, and people stuck in Florida were treated to chicken biscuits.  

"Stranded in Nashville diversion for 2+ hours now on DL1603 but our flight crew bought us pizza. Thank you @Delta !!" said a Tweet.
