Dentist Writes Letter To Mom For Failing To Have Children's Cavities Filled

A furious mom says her pediatric dental office is threatening to report her with parental neglect over cavities. The dentist office says they are mandatory reports and the mother missed appointments to have her children’s' cavities filled.

The mother says they're targeting her because she argued with them and threatened to go to a different dentist.

Trey Hoyumpa of Stroudsburg, PA brought her children, ages 9 and 12, to their dental check-ups. During the check-ups, the dentist said the two kids have seven cavities between them.

Hoyumpa attempted to make an appointment at the desk on the same day for both children so she wouldn't have to miss more than one day of work, but the receptionist refused to accommodate her. This resulted in a heated argument and the mother told them she would seek dental care elsewhere.

She later admitted in an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle that by the time she left the office, she was screaming. She had no intention of going back.

Three months later, the mom got a letter from Smiles 4 Keeps, her pediatric dental office, threatening to report her for neglect.

“According to law, failure to bring your child for dental care is considered neglect. Pennsylvania Act 31 (Child Abuse Reporting and Recognition Requirements) states that health care providers must report your failure to bring your child to the dentist for evaluation and care," the letter stated.

"To keep your child as healthy as possible and avoid a report to state authorities, please call Smiles 4 Keeps immediately to schedule a treatment appointment within the next 30 days.”

The furious mother posted a copy of the letter to Facebook, complaining that the office 'bullies the parents, controls the care behind closed doors, and turns parents into villains'.

She notes that parents don't get to go into the office with children or get to meet the dentist, and there is a policy that parents can make only one appointment for fillings per day, and must come on a separate day if they have other children.

Many other parents commented on the Facebook page to complain. One woman said she recently went through the exact same thing. The post went viral with a number of patients lodging complaints about the office.

Others slammed Hoyumpa for not just following procedure.

Smiles 4 Keeps posted a comment on their own Facebook page after the controversy broke out. “Letters that refer to dentists’ mandate to report failure to seek necessary treatment are sent under specific conditions," they wrote.

"Letters are intended to remind parents and caregivers of the need for dental treatment for the child in question, and the letters are not sent unless attempts at multiple communications with the parents or guardians are unsuccessful or messages from our office remain unanswered. Letters are not sent after one missed treatment appointment.”

Hoyumpa has been seeking a new dentist, as well as a second opinion since she says Smiles 4 Keeps refused to show her proof of so many cavities. She believes the company may be taking advantage of low-income parents who have few options due to being on state insurance.

“I understand that dentists are mandated reporters, but this is bullying,” she says.
