Doctor Watching HGTV's 'Beachfront Bargain Hunt' Saves Woman's Life Appearing On Show

One woman had a new lease on life after defeating brain cancer, and she was hunting for her dream home: a beach house in South Carolina. She appeared on an episode of HGTV's 'Beachfront Bargain Hunt' and shared her search with fans of the network. Thankfully, an eagle-eye doctor was watching the episode. He noticed she had a lump on her neck that could indicate a serious health issue.

Nicole McGuinness, a 32-year-old house hunter, looked perfectly healthy as she tried to track down her dream home on the real estate show. What she didn't notice, however, was a small lump at the base of her throat that threatened to destroy her plans.

Thankfully, Dr. Erich Voigt, an ear, nose and throat surgeon at NYU Langone Health, was watching. He noticed the small lump and believed it could be a sign of cancer. He felt compelled to contact the reality show guest.

"I felt obliged to let this person know,” he said to Inside Edition. "They may not know they have something."

The problem is that the show doesn't reveal the last name of guests so that they can't be bothered by the public. Voigt used social media to track down McGuinness. He was finally able to make contact with her through Facebook when someone sent a video he posted to her.

McGuinness took no chances. She went to a doctor, as Voigt advised, and a biopsy revealed that she had thyroid cancer.

Who knows how long McGuinness could have gone on before she realized it? It's scary to think about. McGuinness is eternally grateful to Voigt.

“Dr. Voigt saw this, and brought it to my attention, and now I’ll be treated for it,” she told ABC News. “It’s just a miracle, in my opinion, that he happened to see this on television. I can’t express how grateful and thankful I am.”

“You have no idea how much you’ve impacted my life,” McGuinness told Voigt.

Voigt says due to his specialty, he's trained to notice such things Voigt took to Facebook to thank people and update them on the situation.

"Follow up to a post.....( I’m posting this because several people have helped a stranger through the power of Facebook)," he wrote.

"She went for the sonogram and biopsy I recommended. She just let me know.. the biopsy revealed thyroid cancer. She will be seeing a surgeon and getting appropriate treatment and I hope she will be cured! Awesome power of Facebook and good people!" he wrote.

People on Facebook celebrated the victory.

"I saw it on your original post. So obvious when you pointed it out. Great Job!!! Saving lives when watching TV," one wrote.

"As a friend of Nicole's, I appreciate your astute observation and your efforts to contact her! Totally above and beyond," said another.

"I just saw this story and it is physicians like you, Erich P Voigt, that make the world better!" another said.

"I find this to be a daring and brave act of heroism," one person notes.

"I have witnessed many medical questions/forums online where doctors won't or can't (in good faith or fear of negative consequences) take a guess, make an assumption, or give any advice behind suggesting a doctor be seen in person. Many (if not most) of these forums the doctors are paid to answer these questions. You not only went out of your way to share your opinions with this woman, but you did so for free, and lack of fear. Doctors like you are amazing and scarce. I admire the compassion you have displayed in your selfless pursuit of helping to save lives."
