Doctors Open Mom Up During C-Section - Make Disturbing Find

A blogger had been looking forward to the birth of her baby, but problems began arising at the end. When the baby was born, doctors were surprised to find a rare 'true knot' in the umbilical cord.

The mom shared a picture of the potentially deadly knot.

Rebecca Meldrum, a mother of two, was blogging for months in anticipation of her third child. The 28-year-old was having a difficult pregnancy this time around, with possible exposure to the Zika virus, and concerns about her placenta.

To move things along, she and her midwife tried to induce labor, but nothing happened.

"I just want something to happen, it's been really frustrating," blogged the mom in an update, admitting that she was impatient. "I've been watching birth videos as apparently that is a good way to get things going."

"I think it's going to be a long day. I've been monitored, baby is happy, everything's fine but nothing is happening."

She waited and debated about what to do next. Her doctor didn't recommend another attempt at inducing, as it could put a baby in distress.

Meldrum finally had to be rushed to the hospital and was given a caesarian section. That's when they found another problem: the umbilical cord had what they call a 'true knot'.

After the birth, the mommy blogger posted a photo of her baby's umbilical cord, showing that a knot was tied in it. "If you're squeamish or eating your breakfast then look away now!" she warned.

"This knot was in Poppy's cord, a True Knot which apparently is pretty uncommon 1 in 2,000 babies I think the midwife said," she wrote on Instagram.

Meldrum reported the sad news that she came home from the hospital alone. Poppy, born August 5, had to remain after some complications.

"The umbilical cord carries oxygen and nutrients from the placenta into the baby’s bloodstream," Dr. Patrick O'Brien, spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, told the Daily Mail.

"If the umbilical cord becomes tightly knotted, there will be a reduction in the flow of blood, depriving the baby of oxygen which can lead to permanent brain injury. A problem with the umbilical cord could also cause the baby to be stillborn."

True knot cords are rare, and even when they occur, they usually don't harm the baby. The knot would have to get pulled tight in order to cause the baby any problems; but, occasionally, it does happen.

Poppy was admitted to the NICU and was being treated for low birth weight, breathing problems and regulating her temperature. Meldrum says coming home without her baby in her arms was traumatizing.

"I can honestly say I have never ever been through emotions like I have been through these last few days & I'm sure will continue to go through until we are all home together," she said. "I've cried in a way I've never heard myself cry before, loud, ugly & almost primal need for my baby to be with me."

"I've stared into space for hours upon end wishing I was pregnant still, I've gone through every hospital appointment, scan & meeting from the last 6 months trying to work out how this could have ended up differently," she adds.

On Thursday, Meldrum posted an update to say that things looked good.

"Spent the morning with Poppy, who after been so feisty & pulling off her CPAP is being trialed without it! She's made of strong stuff this one, she's also wearing a vest for the first time which makes all the difference but just being able to see her beautiful little face without a mask has made me so so happy, another step towards home & normality," she wrote on Facebook.
