Doctors Remove 9lb Hairball From Teenage Girl

A teenage girl who had become unable to eat or drink water had to have emergency surgery to remove a huge nine-pound hairball from her stomach.

Teenager Ayperi Alekseeva, who is a resident of Kyrgyzstan, had lived with months of dehydration and malnourishment because she couldn’t eat or drink, and doctors say she would have died if she did not seek medical care when she did.

When doctors in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan performed surgery on her stomach, they discovered a giant hairball created by years of eating her own hair and hair off the floor.

Professor Bahadir Bebezov, senior professor of surgery at Bishkek Hospital noted: "By the time we got her she could not even drink water. We realized we needed to operate immediately."

Bebezov continued: "It was actually the only alternative – nothing else would solve the problem. In fact her stomach was so badly swollen from hair and bits of wool from the carpet that it literally just oozed out soon as the wall of the stomach was cut.”

He further states "Psychologically, apart from a habit of picking up hair from the carpet and eating it, the young girl was perfectly normal and healthy."

Medical experts note the compulsive eating of hair is named Trichophagia, and if not treated can develop into Rapunzel Syndrome, where a hairball in the stomach grows a “tail” leading into the lower intestine.

After returning home and recovering from surgery, Alekseeva promised that she would never chew or eat her hair in the future.
