15-Year-Old Girl Gets Sent To Juvenile Detention For Protesting School's Dress Code

A 15-year-old girl went to war with her school over the dress code, and landed herself in a juvenile detention center for six days. She's now on house arrest. Her mother believes the new principal just wanted to make an example out of her daughter.

When school started in Christian County, Kentucky in August, the summer heat was still unbearably hot. Isabella Messer showed up to school in a seasonal shirt that bared her shoulders, and she was immediately hit with a suspension.

Messer thought the suspension was unfair. Apparently, the dress code for the school had just been updated and banned shirts that show shoulders. Messer says she wasn't made aware of the ban until she was punished.

The rebellious teen wouldn't let the situation go. Her mother, equally outraged by the way her daughter was treated, helped her make a stands. Theresa Rucks helped her daughter create a shirt that would be a peaceful protest.

The new shirt was very modest. It had a high neckline, sleeves came to the elbows, it was boxy and covered up Messer. It also had a message.

Across the front of the shirt read, "Do my shoulders turn you on?"

On the back, it said, "If so, go back to the 1920's."

By fourth period, Messer was pulled out of class for her shirt. Things quickly spiraled out of control.

"A female teacher pulled Bella aside and told her that she felt threatened by the shirt, when Bella explained said it was in her rights to wear it as it is adhering to the dress code," Melinda Rucks, Messer's aunt, wrote on Facebook. "Not only did the teacher put her hands on her, but she felt the need to call in the police. Instead of calling my sister in law to handle the situation how it should have been, the officer who responded madhandled my niece and left visible markings on her neck and arms. She was then sent to a juvenile detention center and is now facing serious charges, all because a school decided that her education was not as important as the comfort of male students and teachers."

When police came to the school, Messer tried to call her mother. They tried to take the phone from her, but the teen became loud and resisted. She held her phone behind her back, but as a school resource officer approached her to take the phone, Messer put her foot out to stop him and hit him in the shin.

Rucks says her daughter's kick was instinctive. “She trains in Taekwondo. Anyone who trains in Taekwondo is going to have that automatic instinct.”

At that point, Messer was restrained and arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and third-degree assault of a law enforcement officer. She was transported to a juvenile detention center and remained there for six days.

“It was freezing, and the blankets were superthin, and the clothes were superthin,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle. "The food tasted superhorrible too, so I was not eating a lot.”

Making matters worse, she was put in with girls who were arrested for serious violent crimes, like attempted murder.

She's been released, but is on house arrest and has to go to an alternative school until a court date in September. She will now have a record. Her family are looking for support because they believe the school and police overreacted to the situation.
