Hairdresser Heartbroken When Teen Tells Her Why Hair Looks Like This

A lot of people will tell you that looks are superficial, but the fact is, how we look on the outside is often a reflection of how we feel about ourselves on the inside. Sometimes, a new makeover can do wonders to lift a person's spirits.

One hairdresser reminded everyone of that when she encountered a new customer.

Kayley Olsson works at a salon, and recently a 16-year-old girl came in to get her hair cut off. The girl's hair had not been tended to for a while; it was badly matted and had clumps of knots.

According to Olsson, the girl explained that she had been depressed for years, and things got so bad that the girl barely ever got out of bed. Besides going to the bathroom, she did little to take care of herself. Just brushing her hair could be draining.

Olsson's heart went out to the teen, who is staying anonymous. The teen girl explained that she was going back to school soon, and she wanted Olsson to just cut all her hair off because she couldn't be bothered caring for it.

"She called herself worthless for it," said Olsson.

The hairdresser decided then and there that she was going to take good care of her young customer. She spent eight hours one day, and five hours the next day, combing out the girl's tangled locks carefully.

After she could get a brush through the hair, she styled it and made her look beautiful.

The shocked teen was very grateful for the pampering and her new look. "I will actually smile for my school’s pictures today, you made me feel like me again," the teen told Olsson.

Olsson snapped some photos and, obscuring the girl's face, showed off her beautiful handiwork. She then posted them on Facebook to talk about the touching experience.

"At the end of the day I want this to be a lesson to people. MENTAL HEALTH is a thing, it effects people all around the world and of all ages!" she wrote.

"PARENTS take it serious don't just push your kids off and tell them to get over something they legitimately can't. A CHILD should NEVER feel so worthless to not even want to brush their hair."

According to I Need a LightHouse, a suicide and depression awareness and education program, approximately 20 percent of all teens will experience a bout with depression before reaching adulthood.

Depression can lead to problems at school, running away, low-self-esteem, substance abuse problems, self harm, reckless and suicidal behavior.

A new hairstyle might seem like a small concern for someone so depressed, but it can actually be part of a downward spiral. When people are extremely depressed, they stop taking care of themselves.

This only makes them feel and look worse, which makes it even harder to take care of themselves. A makeover isn’t going to cure depression, but it can help boost a person and get them out of that downward spiral.

If a person is feeling good about themselves again, even a little, it could help put them on the path of an upward spiral.
