Homeless Man Was Minding His Own Business When Officer Pulled Something Unexpected Out Of His Trunk

Being homeless is a really hard life that millions of people have to endure. Just imagine what it’s like to never know where you’ll find a safe and comfortable place to lay your weary head, or if you’re going to get a hot meal anytime soon.

Think about how it feels having to wander the streets for hours because you have no where to go, and how that the discomfort is only impacted in the winter time when the cold chill in the air settles into your bones.

An elderly homeless man in Phoenix, Arizona was having a really hard day. He was stuck stumbling around the city streets in the dead of winter without any shoes. It is not clear if the man’s shoes were stolen or destroyed, but his feet were freezing, red and raw when he ran into . Phoenix Police Officer Mark Valenzuela.

The homeless man thought his day was just going to get worse when the officer arrived, responding to a call from someone in a gas station. Officer Valenzuela approached the homeless man, who was worried that he was going to be told he had to get away from there. Instead, the officer took a look at the man’s feet.

Bystanders were watching, wondering what was going to happen to the elderly man. One even had a camera rolling. They watched as the officer opened the trunk to his police cruiser and pulled out a box. To their surprise, instead of sending the man on his way, Valenzuela had a pair of shoes for him.

Not only did the officer give the man the shoes, but he dropped down on his knees in front of the homeless guy to help put them on.

"Officer here giving a homeless guy free shoes, brand new shoes," said a bystander who was filming the encounter. "That just shows... exactly how much our officers in Phoenix help the community... and protect the community, so I just thought I'd post this and let everybody know."

Valenzuela wasn’t looking for attention or compliments. He just went about fitting the homeless man with the new shoes, then helped the elderly man to walk for a little while to ensure they fit and were comfortable.

The homeless man struggled to walk. It took him a moment to get his balance. Soon, however, the comfort of the new shoes helped him find his stride and he was beaming with gratitude.

Valenzuela did not stick around to get pats on the back. The officer got back into his patrol car and went on to do his job. Stories like this don’t get as much attention as when a cop does wrong, but the fact is that police officers do these kinds of deeds every single day across the country. They rarely get the credit that they deserve.

It is a wonderful thing when someone gets to witness these random acts of kindness, when officers go above and beyond duty in their mission to protect and serve the public. We need to hear more stories about the good that police officers do, because for most of them, that’s why they joined the force.
