Jennifer Lopez Uses Gender Neutral Pronoun, Gets Slammed For It

Oftentimes in life, it’s the little things that end up meaning the most. A simple gesture or a kind word here and there can speak volumes, and it can have more effect in the long run than more obvious attempts to curry favor.

As the Huffington Post shares, 47-year-old singer-actress Jennifer Lopez demonstrated that with a simple post on social media, and some astute observers were quick to offer up some praise.

The proud aunt shared a snap of her older sister Leslie’s child Brendan, who recently attended the attended the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington, DC.

“This is Brendan my sister Leslie's second child!! They were the one person selected to represent their school at #globalyoungleadersconference in Washington DC!!! And I couldn't be more proud!!! Brendan is strong and smart and loving and a obviously a leader!! Titi Jenn loves you!! #superproudauntie #familia,” she wrote.

Simple enough, but there was a lot more in there if you look closely. Several observers did just that, and they were quick to offer up some praise for JLo.

“This is why I love you. You’re awesome sauce!” shared one user.

“I’m legit crying those pronouns made me so happy. Thanks for sharing this and congrats Brendan!!” shared another user.

As opposed to using traditional male or female pronouns, Lopez used “they” and “their.” American Dialect Society members note on the organization’s website that the word was “recognized by the society for its emerging use as a pronoun to refer to a known person, often as a conscious choice by a person rejecting the traditional gender binary of ‘he’ and ‘she.’”

Inquiring minds wanted to know if Lopez had anything else to offer up in regards to her choice of words, but her rep deferred.

“Jennifer wouldn’t give an additional comment, as everything she needed to say was included in the post,” the rep said.

This is one of those situations where nothing more needed to be said, so kudos to Lopez and her rep for recognizing that. Lopez was obviously conscious of the fact that her sister and her child prefer gender neutral pronouns, so it was basically a no brainer for her.

It would be easy for her to jump into the spotlight to make some kind of ‘statement’ about it, but she wisely recognized that there was no need to do that.

Hopefully, more people will follow Lopez’s lead, and we’re not just talking about her heartfelt social media post. Sometimes less is more when it comes to statements. In Lopez’s case, it was done in a matter-of-fact fashion and there was nothing more to add.

If more folks adopt that mindset, perhaps the days of butting heads over what’s appropriate and what’s not will become a thing of the past.

That may be wishful thinking, so we’ll put that aside for now and treat this for what it is: a loving and heartfelt post from an aunt, and that’s all we really need to see.
