Judge's Unorthodox Punishment Might Give Man Writer's Cramp, But It Gets Him Out Of Jail

School teachers have forced children to write lines as punishments for centuries, and now a judge has decided to put that model to use in one specific case. The man was used to writing some nasty things in his texts to his ex-girlfriend, so the judge ordered him to write just as many nice things about her. The man is going to be busy writing for a while.

Judge Rhonda Loo of Maui, Hawaii didn't know what she was going to do with Daren Young, a 30-year-old man who was harassing his ex-girlfriend. Young got himself in trouble when he wouldn't stop harassing his unnamed ex.

The woman took out an order of protection on Young in February and he was not supposed to contact her, but two months later he lost control of himself. Within a 3-hour period, he started serial texting the woman one after the other. In total, he sent 144 nasty messages.

“I don’t know whether I should cut off your fingers or take away your phone to get you to stop texting,” Loo told Young. “You probably shouldn’t get a phone, period. I hope she changed her number.”

The judge came up with the unorthodox sentence for the man, who pleaded no contest to violating an order of protection. Young was sentenced to write 144 nice things about his girlfriend as a counter to the 144 nasty things that he wrote.

“For every nasty thing you said about her, you’re going to say a nice thing,” Judge Loo said.

“No repeating words,” the judge added.

The 30-year-old disgruntled ex-boyfriend had already spent 157 days in jail. The judge's sentence allows him out, but he will also have to pay $2,400 in fines and perform 200 hours of community service, along with his 'nice' list.

The man has also been ordered to stay away from the woman once and for all, and move on with his life. “It’s so childish to think a grown man can be so thumb-happy,” said the judge.

Young has promised the judge that he's going to avoid repeating his mistakes in the past. It’s unclear who will get the list of 144 compliments he has to write about his ex-girlfriend, but maybe remembering some of the good times will help the man’s hard feelings about the end of the relationship get a bit softer.

Sometimes judges feel that an unusual punishment will have a better effect on a lawbreaker than the same old boring thing. One teen bully who cut off a three-year old's hair was given the option to reduce her sentence if she allowed her mother to cut off her hair right there in the courtroom.

Another judge sentenced a slum lord to live in his own disgusting, dilapidated building so that he could sympathize with his tenants.

In another case, a judge sentenced two teens who vandalized a town's nativity scene to lead a donkey through the town with a sign that read, "Sorry for the jackass offense".
