Kids Help Elderly Couple Get Honeymoon They Never Had Due To Racism

The headlines would have us believe that we're living in the most racist times ever, but the truth is things have been much, much worse. If you care to look, there are numerous signs of improvement all around us.

We might not be perfect yet, and still have a way to go before we can say we've realized Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream, but no one can deny that there has been progress. This story is a perfect example of how things are still improving.

Reverend Gilbert and Grace Caldwell are an elderly couple who have been involved in the civil rights movement for more than 60 years. It all started when they first got married 60 years ago.

They had a lovely wedding and were ready to spend their lives together, but racism put a damper on the African-American couple's happy day.

The couple had made reservations to honeymoon in the famous Mount Airy Resort in the Poconos. After the wedding in their home town in North Carolina, they piled into the car and made the eight-hour drive to Pennsylvania.

When they got to the resort, however, they were denied a room. The hotel refused to allow the couple to stay because they were black.

The incident happened in 1957 when Jim Crow laws were still in effect. Gilbert and Grace were disappointed, but it encouraged them to take a stand for their rights.

The two became heavily involved in the civil rights movement and even worked directly with King before he was killed.

The couple still travels and gives speeches and lectures on racism and rights at schools. A recent trip to one school really hit a chord with the kids.

The couple told a class of fifth graders about how their honeymoon got cut short all those years ago, and the children were saddened by the tale.

When the couple left, the kids continued to talk about it and wanted to do something to make up for the horrible treatment that the Caldwells got.

The kids at the Bear Tavern Elementary in Titusville started a letter-writing campaign to the Mount Airy Resort, asking that the company give the Caldwells an all-expenses-paid vacation. When the letters came pouring in, the staff at the hotel - who are much more progressive than their predecessors - agreed that it was a good idea.

The Caldwells were invited back to the school, and the children presented them with the trip. The couple was touched by the lengths to which the children went for them.

The Reverend and his wife were well taken care of on their second honeymoon and had a lovely trip. It might not make up for generations of discrimination against people of color, but it's a step in the right direction.
