Man Arrested, Charged With A Felony For Making Horrific, Racist Remarks To Waitress

Hate crimes seem to have risen lately, some might blame the election rhetoric for that. The negative atmosphere may have caused this man to forget his manners at home.

A white northwest Missouri man is charged with felony assault after he allegedly confronted a black waitress as she served him breakfast. The local prosecuting attorney announced this week that 65-year-old Tommy Dean Gaa, of Maryville, Missouri has been charged with felony assault motivated by discrimination.

Witnesses to the incident report say Gaa then went out of his way to confront the black waitress at the restaurant.

It began when a waitress asked Gaa what kind of toast he would like with his order. She reports that he answered, saying “I’m prejudiced. I’ll take white.”

Gaa then went out of her way to confront the waitress. He grabbed her arm hard, causing noticeable bruising. According to a probable cause statement, Gaa commented: “I have a place I would like to take you where I hung your grandpa” and used racial slurs.

Of note, Gaa was eventually released from the Nodaway County Jail on a $4,900 bond. Court records do not make clear if he has hired an attorney to represent him in the case.

In a statement, the prosecuting attorney noted that the comments were bad enough, but Gaa clearly crossed the line when he grabbed the arm of the waitress.

Update: Gaa was sentence to 75 days in jail for for third-degree assault motivated by discrimination adn was also placed on five years of probation. If he violates probabtion he could face up to three years in jail.
