Man Attacks Latino Family With A Bat, Shouting "ISIS!" And "Terrorist!" In Streets

A man in Canada attacked a Latino family speaking Spanish with a bat while pointing at them screaming that they were ISIS terrorists. The Hispanic man, who was injured in the confrontation, managed to catch the rantings on his cell phone. The footage from St. Thomas, Ontario quickly went viral.

Sergio Estepa, his girlfriend Mari Zambrano and their 13-year-old son were in a parking lot when they were approached by the suspect. Estepa whipped out his cell phone and began filming.

The suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Mark Philips, got out of his vehicle with a baseball bat and walked threateningly toward the family. According to reports, it began when he overheard the family speaking Spanish. He thought they were speaking French and were French terrorists.

“We were victims of a hate crime in St Thomas Ontario,” tweeted Zambrano, posting the video online. “A guy got mad, because we were talking in Spanish. He was about to hit my son who is 13th years old, but my Hubby jumped while the aggressor swings the baseball bat.”

Philips told Estepa, "You're under arrest."

When Estepa asked why, Philips answered, "Because you're terrorists."

Philips then demanded to see something in Estepa's pocket. He kept coming closer, reaching out, as Estepa and his family retreated. Estepa kept telling Philips to 'stay away'.

Philips threatened to hit Estepa, telling him to 'get the f--k out of here'. He then began pointing and screaming at the top of his lungs, "Terrorist! Terrorist!"

Philips screamed, "We've got ISIS here! It's ISIS! ISIS!"

Estepa and his family continually backed up. Philips hit the father across the back with his bat. He then, still screaming, retreated to his car.

"As this individual went to hit my son and his father stepped in to prevent this man from beating him. Due to this fact my hubby got the attack on him causing him to have severe bruising to his back, and a broken ribs," said Zambrano.

“Only one person helped us. It happened at 4:30, in a mall with a movie theatre and many stores. It’s quite an active mall. We were surprised that they pretended that nothing happened,” said Estepa, who is stunned by the attack.

"The reason why we came to Canada is because we lost our country Colombia because of indifference. The war was in the countryside, we live in the city, we don't care who is killed there. That is the big enemy we have: indifference," he added.

That one person stepped forward and offered to be an eyewitness to the attack.

"She is a person with courage," Estepa said.

Police tracked Philips down to London, Ontario and arrested him. The attack was deemed racially motivated. He's been charged with aggravated assault and three counts of assault with a weapon. He's been denied bail and is scheduled for a hearing.

"It's disturbing. This was an isolated and quite disturbing incident. Hopefully it remains isolated," said Sgt. Brian Carnegie.

UPDATE: Mark Phillips will avoid jail time for the incident claiming he was in a drug-induced psychosis after smoking too much weed. He pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing bodily harm and has been given 3 years probation.
