Columbus, Indiana man Donny Grigsby went to White River Dental planning to have four teeth removed, but when he woke up all of his teeth were gone.
Grigsby’s wife Amanda says after five hours in the waiting room, she demanded answers. She says she was told the dentist had decided it was best to go ahead and pull all of her husband's teeth because of an infection.
The dentist was afraid the infection would spread and become systemic.
Amanda also notes her husband was covered in blood and unresponsive when she saw him. He went into shock on the way to the hospital and had to be revived twice.
"He had been put into a medically induced coma, and he was laying there crying," Amanda explained.
Grigsby says he does not remember much about the experience but says he's still shocked by what happened.
"I am so ashamed now. I have no teeth," he stated quietly.
He is also still tethered to an oxygen tank because he has blood clots after all the dental work. Moreover, he says he still doesn't really understand his teeth were taken.
Update: White River Dental filed a complaint against Grigsby in federal district court, and also provided RTV6 a consent form showing the man authorized the removal of his teeth in order to be fitted with dentures.
Dr. Strickland, the dentist who performed the procedure, tells CW33 that he offered Grisby two treatment options. The first involved several visits consisting of root canals and selective extractions then replacing salvageable teeth with crowns and/or bridges. Or the next option would be a full mouth extraction followed by dentures.
Strickland states that Grigsby's wife already had dentures and urged him to have his teeth removed. They then signed the treatment plan and an Oral Surgery Consent Form for a full mouth extraction.
