City Cleaner Mocked By Stranger Online For Being Poor Is Showered With Donations, Gifts

A low-paid municipal cleaner from Bangladesh was mocked online for looking at gold chains in a jewelry shop window, but things eventually turned out alright for the lucky man.

Racist, insensitive people ridiculed city cleaner Nazer al-Islam Abdul Karim when a photo of him wistfully peering into the window of a jewelry shop in Saudi Arabia ended up on Instagram.

Karma is a truly wonderful thing, however, as Karim has since received numerous gifts — including gold jewelry from the shop whose window he was looking into — after a campaign to find him was successful.

The barely getting by 65-year-old has since received money, bags of rice and honey, tickets to Bangladesh, and an iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy. Moreover, donations for Karim are continuing to arrive.

The whole thing came about because a pic of Karim was taken without his knowledge and uploaded to Instagram with the ugly caption: “This man deserves to only look at rubbish.”

This mean-spirited post upset Abdullah Al-Qahtani (Twitter handle Ensaneyat means humanitarianism in Arabic), who kicked off a campaign to find Karim by tweeting the image and asking for others to help to identify the man.

The campaign first confirmed Karim's location using the reflections in the window of the shop. A day later, they managed to track down the man himself.

Karim was oblivious to his picture being taken and posted online and the search for him. That said, he was stunned and overjoyed when the gifts started showing up.

"I was just doing my job as a cleaner in the municipality and found myself in front of the gold shop. I am very happy about the gifts and very thankful," he noted in an interview.

The jewelry shop owner also told Karim he could choose a set of gold chains and earrings to keep.

Al-Qahtani posted a few pics of the grateful cleaner and his new gifts on Twitter.
