Man Wanted To Get Married, But Records Show He Already Had Three Wives

One elderly man wanted to get married to his girlfriend in 2016. He went to get a marriage license, but was stunned to discover that his application was declined. Apparently, he had married three women over a 12-year span. Unfortunately, the man had never heard of the ladies.

It’s not shocking that some people had such disastrous marriages that they’d rather not talk about them ever again. It’s a period of their lives they just want to put behind them and forget.

Ramon Polanco says three women were on record as his wife, but he wasn’t trying to forget bad marriages. He legitimately had no idea who the women were.

According to the official records, Polanco married Gladys Gonzalez in 1978, Yocasta Tejada in 1982 and Marta Quiles in 1990. He was completely stunned to learn about these relationships.

Polanco did marry a woman named Dilia in 1962 when the two were living in their native Dominican Republic. The couple divorced in 2005, and Dilia says she's quite sure that her husband wasn't running around at the time marrying a bunch of other women.

Ramon and Dilia had eight children, and their eldest, Carlos, also testified that the family lived in the Dominican Republic in 1982 when he was supposedly marrying Yocasta Tejada in New York.

After a bit of investigation, it became clear that Polanco was the victim of identity theft. Someone had fraudulently used his birth certificate and pretended to be him.

The judge suspects that the same person is behind all three of the other marriages. The 1978 and 1972 marriages were listed as divorces on the 1990 marriage license application.

Polanco was also listed as having lived at three different addresses in New York City - one in Manhattan, and two in Brooklyn - where he says he never lived. On one of the marriage licenses, 'taxi driver' was listed as the groom's occupation. Polanco never had a job as a cabbie.

Identity fraud is a growing problem with everything being computerized these days, and it's so easy for a thief to get a hold of credit card numbers or social security numbers. Back before computers ruled the world, however, it was even easier for identity thieves to simply get a name and file for paperwork.

It's not always money that the identity thieves were after. Some would use a person’s social security card or birth certificate to get married. It might have been a thief on the run looking to assume a new identity, or sometimes it was a person looking to help an illegal alien become a citizen by arranging a fraudulent marriage.

The judge ruled Polanco a victim of fraud. Thankfully he’s going to be able to officially drop his three ‘ex-wives’, and he won’t even have to pay a cent in alimony. The judge has recommended that the city 'expeditiously' allow him to marry his current girlfriend. Thankfully, he'll have a chance at that happy ending.
