Mom Burns Copy Of "Teen Vogue" - Features In-Depth Article On Anal Sex

Has Teen Vogue gone too far? For a magazine that caters to a target audience between 11 and 17 years old, one mother thinks so. She's created a video to flame the magazine for a recent article teaching kids how to have anal sex.

The video culminates in her burning the magazine.

Teen Vogue published the article, “Anal Sex What You Need to Know,” in their June issue. The article approaches the topic in an easy-to-read, engaging, clinical, non-judgmental way. It's an attempt to educate and inform.

“It's important that we talk about all kinds of sex because not everyone is having, or wants to have, ‘penis in the vagina’ sex," writes author Gigi Engle in the article. "If you do have ‘penis in the vagina’ sex and are curious about something else, or are finding that that type of sex is not for you and you'd just like to explore other options, it's helpful to know the facts.”

Elizabeth Johnston, known as the 'Activist Mommy' on her vlog, thinks the article pushed the boundaries way too far.

“They are teaching children eleven through seventeen—that's the target audience of this magazine Teen Vogue—children eleven through seventeen how to be safely sodomized," she explains, holding a backyard bonfire. "Yes, they are teaching kids how to have anal intercourse. We should not be teaching children, period, how to have sex.”

Johnston encouraged other parents to go out to local supermarkets and convenience stores and browse around for the issue. If found, she recommends concerned adults approach the manager, show them the content and demand that the magazine be pulled from the store's racks.

The Activist Mommy isn't alone. Many parents have expressed utter outrage over the article, peppering comments with words like 'appalled', 'sickening' and 'disgusting'.

Just as many people have come to slam the article, many have come forward to defend it as well. People who approve of all kinds of sex education, such as Teen Vogues Digital Editorial Director, Phillip Picardi. He argues that 'education doesn't equal encouragement'.

Most kids are probably not looking to have anal sex, though they may be curious. Some argue it's better for curious kids to be informed through a reputable, factual source than to get questionable information during hushed conversations. The conversation about anal sex is particularly relevant to gay teens.

Picardi, an openly gay man, unleashed a Twitter rant explaining that his 12 years of Catholic schooling did not prepare him for intimate relationships, which got him into some trouble in his college years. He believes sex education is invaluable.

Others have criticized the article, but not for the same reason as the Johnston. Breitbart, the conservative media outlet, reports that the article fails to inform teens of an important fact: that engaging in anal sex puts one at the highest risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases because the rectum has a thin lining.

They quote the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, "Anal sex is the riskiest sexual behavior for getting and transmitting HIV for men and women.”

The Independent argues from a feminist perspective, saying that the article sends the wrong message. In the article, people are described as being 'prostate owners' and 'non-prostate owners'.

"What is this teaching the audience of a magazine aimed at teenage girls? It tells them their identity is not 'woman', but rather 'non-man'. It tells them that should they consent to anal sex, their body is just a hole for the man to penetrate, and the part of their body that is most sensitive and reliable for the female orgasm is so irrelevant that it doesn’t even warrant a label. It tells them that consenting to anal sex is not about their pleasure, but about their partner’s.”
