Mom Outraged When She Hears What Teacher Did To 5-Yr-Old At Recess

The son of well-known Australian blogger, Constance Hall, was shamed by his school teachers after he was packed a chocolate milk for his morning ‘recess’ snack. The normally no-nonsense mother was taken aback after her son, Arlo, complained about having chocolate milk again, telling Ms. Hall that his teachers were refusing to let him drink it until lunchtime because it was too “unhealthy.”

“I had an awkward moment this week… I had to order Arlo’s lunch… I didn’t have enough food at home,” Ms. Hall confessed in one of her the most recent episodes of her podcast ‘The Queen Sesh’. When Ms. Hall is stuck in this situation, she usually will provide her 5-year-old boy with a recess snack before his lunch gets delivered during his second break. After consulting her son’s school on what was most appropriate for a recess snack, the school offered yoghurt, chocolate milk or juice: “So I thought chocolate milk would be good so it could line his tummy if he's only having yogurt for recess. So for the last three months I've been giving him a yogurt and a chocolate milk for recess.”

This routine went on for two whole months until one day Arlo complained about his chocolate milk, telling Ms. Hall “‘I wish that you didn't get me the chocolate milk . . . the teachers don't let me have it. They make me have it at lunch time because it's not healthy enough for recess.’” Ms. Hall was confused as to why his teacher was refusing to let him have his recess snack, particularly since chocolate milk was one of the school’s suggested items.

Although Ms. Hall did mention that the teachers are not withholding the chocolate milk altogether but are just making him wait until lunch time, she was appalled that the school had not made an effort to contact her and inform her not to pack chocolate milk: “I felt embarrassed . . . but then I thought, you know what, maybe [they] should have informed me if my kid hasn't been able to have his chocolate milk at recess for the last two months.”

A similar story recently made headlines after a high school student was shamed in front of her class for packing too much food for school. A mother, known as ‘LemonDrizzleDisco’ on Mumsnet was left outraged after her daughter’s teachers told her that she packed too much food in her lunchbox. The high school, which has only just begun screening children’s lunch boxes, had packed a peanut and jelly sandwich, a small banana, some strawberries and less than a handful of dried coconut flakes and raisins.

“[My daughter's] secondary school has started checking all the packed lunches,” the unknown mother stated. “I know lots of secondary school students eat sweets and chocolate, etc. on the way to school, but surely at that age It's their choice.” When considering that the school canteen serves sausage rolls, cakes and a handful of other sweets, it is understandable that this mother is furious: “The canteen serves things like sausages and mash, cake and custard, sandwiches, and doughnuts, etc,. [Am I being unreasonable] to think this is unfair?”

This particularly frustrated mother quickly gained the support of her fan base, with one user condoning the school’s behavior stating, “That sort of behavior is more likely to do harm than good, isn't it?”
