Back in the early summer of 2015, a chocolate lab named Bella who lived in Nebraska was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer. Her owner, Robert Kugler, was advised that either Bella’s front leg should be amputated or she should be put to sleep because she was in pain. He decided to remove Bella’s leg, and she was given around three to six months to live, because the cancer was now also in her lungs. Kugler made the big decision to take his long-time best friend on a magnificent farewell adventure.
“I’m the best version of myself when I’m with her, and I wanted to be that person full time. I wanted to share moments with her where it was just her and I under the great blue sky,” Kugler explained in a recent interview.
The pair have ended up traveling to a number of wonderful locales all across the country including Chicago, Key West, Nashville, and Savannah, and the two best friends are not done yet. It has been almost 15 months now, and the man and his dog are still traveling the country as a team.
Moreover, Bella is doing well. “She is doing fantastic,” Kugler said. “The vets have said to keep doing what we’re doing, because it’s obviously working.”
