Parents Stage 'Wedding' For Five-Year-Old As Little Bride Faces Open Heart Surgery

One little girl in Connecticut was born with a life-threatening heart condition. In her short five years, she has already undergone numerous procedures, including two open-heart surgeries. She's scheduled for another open-heart surgery in January, and had one item on her bucket list she wanted to tick off before going to the hospital: she wanted to marry her best friend.

Sophia Elyssa Chiappalone became a 'child bride' on October 23 when she married her best friend from preschool. Sophia and her fiancé, Hunter, exchanged their 'vows' on the playground before a photographer, with the bride and groom's moms as witnesses.

Sophia has tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia, a genetic heart disorder that resulted in her being born with half a heart and numerous health issues. Her mother, Kristy Somerset-Chiappalone, who is a single mom, has been documenting her daughter's journey on the Facebook page 'Sophia Elyssa Chiappalone the beautiful baby with a broken heart'.

The little girl's case is severe and will require several more open heart surgeries to repair damage. She may eventually need a heart and lung transplant, and the condition will likely shorten the little girl's lifespan. With every surgery posing risks, no one really knows how short it could end up being.

“There is no life expectancy at this time because there’s no reason for her to be alive," said her mother.

Even with all of her health troubles, Sophia has a twinkle in her eye and a sparkling smile. Her mom wanted to make the few weeks before the surgery a memorable time for her daughter, and wanted to know what Sophia would like to do to live her every day to the fullest. Sophia just had one request for her mother.

“I just want to marry Hunter,” she said.

Sophia and Hunter met at the age of four at vacation Bible school. The two have been inseparable ever since. “Since then, there is no bond like those two have had since pre-school,” Somerset-Chiappalone said. “The way they are together is just so heartwarming.”

Once Sophia said she wished she could marry her best friend, Tracy Laferriere, Hunter’s mother, wanted to make the girl's dream come true. “It’s kind of sweet just the way they are with each other. It was just sad that was what a five-year-old girl is thinking and wishing. I wanted to make it happen for her as much as I could.”

The two moms got together to plan the little wedding, and Tracy called in her best friend to help. Photographer Marisa Balletti-Lavoie of Sassy Mouth Photography snapped the photos.

It was a lovely fall day. The bride was wearing a dress and veil from Jessica Boni of Bliss Bridal and looked like a little angel. Hunter, in his striped shirt, looked very stylish and handsome. The two posed for lots of fun photos, throwing leaves like confetti, playing on the playground equipment, and planting kisses on each other’s cheeks.

Both moms and Hunter are hoping and praying the surgery goes well for Sophia; but until then, they want to make sure she’s happy and loving her life.
