Park Ranger Finds Mysterious Shack Hidden In Woods

Mark Andre is Arcata’s Environmental Services director, and he knows the local forests as well as anyone alive. He had not visited this area of the forest in many years, however, so he was stunned to find a small cabin nestled in an out-of-the-way location.

Moreover, it wasn’t a ramshackle lean-to strewn with trash, but a real cabin designed to last for at least a few years.

It was around eight by 12 feet and around 15 or so feet high, with a concrete block foundation, a solid frame, a porch with a wooden awning, several windows and plywood covered with brown tarps, black plastic sheeting.

The cabin was also very carefully disguised with tree branches and forest scrub material.

There are no trails surrounding the cabin and only a faint footpath from the trail. There is also none of the abuse associated with forest campsites such as trash or an open-air latrine.

The cabin’s interior was spare but more than ample for a reasonably comfortable habitation. It sported a combination kitchen and living room, with a good bit of food and housekeeping supplies.

A rocking chair is adjacent to a pot-bellied stove across a mattress/sofa combo. Other shelves display tools and items ranging from a vintage Royal typewriter to a small library.

There are also storage bins with reams of fabric, and other camping equipment and supplies.

Cabin Will Be Removed Soon

The local police left a warning notice with contact information on the door of the cabin.
Of note, this area of the forest is due for a logging harvest next month, so the cabin will be removed soon.

If no one claims the cabin and belongings first, the possessions will be stored by local authorities.
