Plumber Found Body Of Infant Who Had Been Stuffed In Drain Three Years Earlier

A woman's disturbing past came back to haunt her after a plumber made a shocking find in a sewer. The woman had given birth to a baby in 2013 that she claims was stillborn, and she stuffed the tiny body into a drainage pit behind her parents’ home. The woman has now been sentenced to 12 months in jail for concealing the birth of a child.

The plumber made the discovery of the tiny corpse when he was digging in the drainage pit at the end of a family's garden. He called police and Sinead Connett and her parents were questioned. Connett denied having ever given birth, and her mother, who knew nothing about the child, backed her daughter up.

Police investigated and tested blood stains found on the towel that the baby was wrapped in. The blood matched Connett's DNA, and she finally confessed. She told police that the baby was hers, but she was traumatized because she got pregnant from being raped. She says a taxi driver raped her when she was on her way home from a night out.

Connett told police she didn't know she was pregnant until it was too late for an abortion, and later gave birth to a stillborn in the bathroom of her apartment alone. She says she cleaned herself up, wrapped the baby in a towel and placed him in triple bagged him in storage bags. She kept the body in the car until she finally dumped it in her parent’s drainage pit.

Police discovered that there were several lies that Connett told them. For one thing, the baby was fathered by her partner, Jonathan Layfield, who is currently her husband. It was not an unknown taxi driver, and there was no evidence of her being out the night that she had claimed to have been raped.

Connett did see a doctor at a clinic before it was too late to get an abortion, and he referred her to a clinic. She didn't show up at the clinic until it was too late, and then she attempted to lie about the date of conception. When the clinic workers didn't buy it, she left and didn't come back, taking matters into her own hands.

Connett has since gone on with her life and gotten married to Layfield, who never knew anything about the baby. Her parents called a plumber, unbeknownst to her, when their downstairs toilet became clogged. That's when the plumber made the gruesome discovery.

"You caused the police to embark on an intensive and expansive investigation to secure the truth," the judge scolded Connett at the sentencing. "What was needed was the truth – what you provided was a catalogue of lies."

“I have made the decision that you will go to prison immediately,” the judge said. “As a consequence of your truly deplorable conduct, you have brought misery and shame on you and your family…. You deprived your dead son of any dignity.”

On top of being sentenced to 12 months, Connett's husband is divorcing her.
