Police Handcuff 11-Year-Old Girl Just For Walking Out Of Her House

In yet another incident in which police officers show poor judgement in their interactions with people of color, law enforcement officers in Grand Rapids, Michigan handcuffed an innocent 11-year-old girl and held her at gunpoint after she walked out of her house during a search for a stabbing suspect.

Honestie Hodges explained in an interview with local Grand Rapids media that she, her mom and a friend went out the back door of her home to go to the store when officers confronted the group.

The frightened girl’s mom, Whitney Hodges, who was present for the entire incident, said officers told Honestie to raise her hands and then walk backwards. Although she had committed no crime, and they had no reason to suspect her of committing a crime, the officers handcuffed the girl, patted her down and made her get into the rear seat of a police car, according to her mom.

“It made me feel scared and it made me feel like I did something wrong,” Honestie commented in her interview.

“The whole time they are telling her to come down, I’m telling them, ‘She’s 11 years old. That’s my daughter. Don’t cuff her,’” an upset Hodges commented to her interviewer.

Honestie said she sat in the back of the cruiser, then got so scared she started banging on the windows and yelling to her mom, “Please don’t let them take me.”

Grand Rapids Police announced an internal investigation into the handling of the incident has been launched. The department released a statement that said officers were present at the Hodges' home searching for the child’s aunt, Carrie Manning, 40, who is white.

Manning was eventually arrested, and at the time was a suspect in a domestic stabbing that occurred nearby, and the police had reason to believe Manning was armed with a knife.

A statement posted late Monday on Facebook by the GR PD provided more details on the incident:

"Once on scene, officers determined that the suspect fled the residence still armed with the knife, Their investigation led to a second Westside Grand Rapids home where it was believed the suspect may have fled to. As officers were setting up a perimeter, three females simultaneously exited the home, two adults and one 11 year old juvenile. Until it could be determined that the individuals were not the suspect, nor armed with a weapon, the three were ordered back to officers and detained. The homeowner gave consent to search the home, and it was deemed that none of the three individuals that exited the home were the suspect officers were searching for nor was the suspect in the home. The females were subsequently released."

Honestie said she is still afraid and emotionally upset about what happened to her. Moreover, the pre-teen says the negative experience has changed her mind about considering law enforcement for a career.

“I’m afraid to open or go near my back door ... because of what happened,” she stated. “I wanted to be a detective or police officer, but now I don’t want anything to do with those kind of things.”

The Grand Rapids Police Department refused to reply to further questions about the incident with Honestie until the internal investigation has been finalized.
