Police Horrified By What They Find In Man's Car After He Killed Family

A man driving a truck on a freeway plowed into a stranded car on the side of the road. A grandmother, two grandchildren and a motorist who stopped to help them were instantly killed. The driver of the truck had open beer cans in the back and police suspect he was drinking, but he was not arrested at the scene. They're waiting for the results of a toxicology report.

Maria Rodriguez, a 58-year-old grandmother, was driving with her daughter, Maria Briseno, and two grandchildren, step-siblings Ailyn Miguel and Isacc Briseno on the 10 Freeway in California. The car began to overheat, so Rodriguez pulled over to the side of the road. She and Briseno got out of the car, and the two 12-year-old children remained in the back seat.

A motorist pulled over to help. Jose Prieto stopped his car and got out to see if he could lend a hand. Rodriguez called her husband , Conrado Rivera, to tell him about the breakdown, and he started to make his way over.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Luis Sanchez, a 64-year-old man driving home from work, came barreling down the highway and slammed his white Nissan truck into Rodriguez, Prieto and the Honda where the children were sitting. The back-seat section of the Honda ended up in the front seat. The four were killed instantly.

Briseno was the only survivor. She was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where family members say she's not doing very well. “You can’t put into words,” said her cousin, Rocio Ramierez, to ABC News. “She’s not stable. It’s something that I think is going to take a long time for her to cope with it. It’s tough, she lost both of her kids and her mom.”

Prieto's car was also hit, but thankfully there were no passengers in the car. it was pushed over several lanes and ended up hitting a divider.

Rivera is also struggling. The husband pulled up in the aftermath of the crash. “She was the love of my life,” he said of his wife, Mrs. Rodriguez.

Jesus Garcia, a California Highway Patrol Officer, said that open beer cans were found in Sanchez's truck. A toxicology test was ordered to determine if he was driving under the influence, but it could take a month for test results to come back.

In the meantime, Garcia is still a free man. “He wasn’t arrested at the time so it is going to take a little bit,” says Garcia, giving Sanchez the benefit of the doubt. “There were some cans in the truck but it doesn’t mean anything really. The impact was so great those cans could have been anywhere. We don’t know. It is part of the investigation.”

Garcia says it was a miracle no one else got hurt with the way the vehicles were thrown. The road at the time of the accident, around noon, had been packed.
