Police Immediately Arrest Grandfather After Seeing Disturbing Snapchat

In a tragic series of events, a woman's Snapchat was used to catch her rapist. While it’s very sad that she lost her privacy, the video may have saved her from the horrific situation she was in. A friend in another state called police when the video was posted. It appeared to show the woman being raped.

The unnamed victim was staying with her grandmother and her grandmother’s current husband, 77-year-old James Allen. Things started going wrong the evening before, when Allen began plying the 20-year-old woman with alcohol.

At some point in the middle of the night, the woman called a friend in Texas. Something didn’t sit well with the friend in Texas, so he called police in the girl’s Ohio town and asked them to perform a welfare check on the girl.

Police arrived at the step-grandfather’s house at about 1 a.m. Allen brought police up to the girl’s room. She was clearly intoxicated, but unharmed and safe in her grandparents’ house. The police were satisfied that she would be okay, and they left the residence.

At around 3:45 a.m., the person from Texas called back police with some alarming news. He reported that he was browsing Snapchat when a video was posted to the girl’s account. In the video, it looked like she was being sexually assaulted.

Police Chief Michael S. Meisler took a look at the video and says the content appeared as though the woman were protesting during the encounter. He believed the video was evidence of sexual assault, but says an investigation is ongoing.

Officers went back to the home that night and Allen was arrested. He is currently being held on $1 million bond.

The woman was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center and is being treated. There is no word on her condition. There is also no word on her grandmother, who was also in the house that night.

Police are asking anyone who might have received the video to please immediately delete it.

According to authorities, they don’t have all the answers yet as to what happened with the video. They’re not sure if it was livestreamed, or posted later. They also aren’t sure if the girl posted it deliberately, or by accident.

The only thing that’s clear on the video is that Allen is having sex with the intoxicated victim, and she was repeatedly telling him ‘no’ and rejecting his advances. Allegedly, he continued to sexually assault her despite her protests.

Police say that it’s sad the video was published to the public, but if it hadn’t been, they might not have known about the incident at all. James Van Eerten, Ottawa County Prosecutor, says that he believes the video is evidence of a sexual assault taking place.

"It's obviously horrific, but at least it allowed us to put a stop to the situation and make a quick arrest in this case," said Van Eerten to The Blade in a comment.
