Restaurant Owner Stuns Community After Banning Children From His Establishment

A restaurant in Florida has been met with criticism after announcing a controversial change in their policy towards children. Customers have expressed their disappointment after a popular Tampa Bay restaurant barred its doors to children. The restaurant in question, Hampton Station, gave customers little warning before engraving the message “No Children Allowed: Please Order At The Bar” on the front doors.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Hampton Station – a pizza and craft beer restaurant in Seminole Heights – is now enforcing a total ban on children. The owner of the restaurant, Troy Taylor, has defended the rule change, telling the Tampa Bay Times that he made the decision because he was sick of parents leaving their children unsupervised in his restaurant.

A recent incident, involving unsupervised children and aggressive Seminole Heights locals, was the final straw for Mr. Taylor. Now, the restaurant owner hopes that his ban on kids might actually keep them safer. “A kid was in danger and could have seriously been hurt. It’s a liability and safety issue. After the incident, I thought, this can’t happen again,” he emphasized, adding: “It’s one of the toughest things I’ve ever done. It’s been gut-wrenching.”

Regardless of his reasoning, Mr. Taylor’s decision quickly sparked furious debate on social media. Here is a collection of some of the more civilized comments that have been directed at Mr. Taylor:

“My question is how does this not fall into some type of discrimination?”

“That’s horrible just because they had a few bad eggs to ban all kids.

“This is a place that neighborhood families rallied around. I mean, this place literally uses action figures as their order markers.”

Fortunately, some commenters stuck by the decision, with one Facebook user writing: “I’m happy to see restaurants are taking a stand and saying, ‘We don’t want kids in here being noisy or messy, we’re going to create an environment for adults only.’ I was a waitress for six years and kids running around a restaurant is one of the most dangerous things in the world.”

This isn’t the first time that a restaurant has copped some negative publicity after banning children. However, a growing number of customers are registering their approval of the controversial rule. In fact, business has been booming after a popular Australian business, ‘Flynn’s Restaurant’, banned children aged seven and under. In an interview with Business Insider, the owner, Liam Flynn, excitedly said: "Business is booming. ... People are spending up large, drinking fine wine and spending up big."

TripAdvisor reviews for Flynn’s Restaurant support the owner’s claims. "Far too many of my meals have been ruined by children not attended to by their parents…I absolutely support the owner's decision regarding children at the restaurant as the size, layout, cuisine style & general atmosphere are suited to quiet/intimate/relaxed dining," writes one customer. “Flynn's new policy of 'no children under 7' is a fantastic idea,” agreed another, adding that “What Flynn's has done here is statistically increase your chances for a pleasant meal experience.”
