Retired Fertility Doctor Spared Jail Time After Guilty Plea For Using Own Sperm On Patients

Even the hardest workers in the world can find themselves overwhelmed at times, but cutting corners is never an appropriate means of getting through rough patches. Eventually, a slackening of standards will catch up to you, and you may find yourself with a whole lot of other problems besides feeling as if you have too much to do.

We have no idea if that’s what inspired this former fertility doctor to use such incredibly irresponsible judgment in the running of his practice, but we’re at a loss for any possible justifiable reason why he would make such disturbing choices.

As the New York Post shares, Dr. Donald Cline, 79, has finally decided to come clean about something he was suspected of doing for some time. He’s now had to plead guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice for lying to investigators, but a judge in Marion County, Indiana decided to hand him just a one-year suspended prison sentence.

So what did he do in the first place? Based on all rational interpretations, he’s done something that deserves a whole lot more than a suspended sentence.

Cline has confessed to using his own sperm to impregnate his patients. Several now-adult patients of his former clients banded together to file a complaint back in 2014 when they suspected that Cline had been cutting corners.

Online genetic tests pointed to the possibility that he may have fathered more than 20 children, but he initially dismissed those claims.

He finally came clean and admitted that he used his own sperm in procedures as many as 50 times back in the 1970s, all while claiming that no donor had been used more than three times - and that all donors were properly screened to ensure they were above reproach.

“This wasn’t just a handful of kids or mothers that this happened to that resulted into a handful of children. We’re now into several dozen. And it’s going to continue to grow,” said one of Cline’s accusers.

“I’m ecstatic. I couldn’t be any happier,” shared another accuser. “I wish there were more charges. And I wish that all the senators and everybody would listen to us and do something but this is a start.”

“We want to stop this from happening again because it was wrong on so many levels. Even though there are no laws against it, it was wrong and he needs to own up to what he did and we need to prevent this from happening again,” added another member of the group that filed the complaint.

While it’s great that Cline has come clean and all, the fact that he will be serving no jail time is basically a slap in the face to his former clients and their offspring. Where is the justice for them in this equation?

In fairness to the judge and prosecutors in Marin County, no other charges have been filed because there’s no specific law on the books in the state of Indiana that prohibits fertility doctors from using their own sperm.

We’ll go out on a limb and assume that the oversight will be corrected in the future, but that’s of small solace to those affected by this doctor’s disturbing actions.
