Student Always Sat Alone At Lunch, But This Broke His Mother's Heart

One mom worried about her son, who suffered from multiple health problems when she dropped him off at school. She would text him every day at lunchtime because through four years of high school, he would always sit alone at the table each day.

One day, however, her son didn't respond to her text, and when she found out why, she was thrilled.

Kay Kirby says that she cried when she found out her son Andrew was invited by some other students to sit with them at lunchtime. It was the first time Andrew did not eat alone, and the mother couldn't be more thrilled.

It was Andrew's first day of high school in his junior year. When he didn't answer his mother's usual lunchtime text, Kirby became a little worried. After school, when she went to pick up Andrew, she got some good news from him.

"Mom, I didn't eat alone!" Andrew reported, according to his mom in a social media post. "Some student council members asked me and three others eating alone to come sit with them, and said we could eat with them again tomorrow too!"

"This has been a concern of ours every year. The thought of our son or any child eating alone everyday breaks our heart," said Kirby.

Andrew, who attends South Carolina Boiling High School, was adopted by the Kirbys. He was born with a crack cocaine addiction and also suffers from neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes tumors to grow along his nervous system. Because of this, Andrew has had to have major surgeries on his back and neck.

“He’s had a lot of challenges,” Kay said, which include major back and neck surgeries. “He’s bright, but he’s just different. Over the years, he’s had administration... staff [sit by him], but he’s never had his own peers.”

Kirby's post has been viewed more than 14,000 times since she put it up, and thousands of comments have poured in with people touched by the story.

"Way to go guys! Way to set an example and show what true leadership is all about," said one commenter.

"That was awesome all u kids out here please if u see someone alone go set with them kids that makes there days and makes them happy be nice to others," said another.

"Andrew I am very proud of you and I know your new friends are going to be very proud of you. Don't change who your are , you are great!" another poster said.

Kirby has since updated to say that national news sources have picked up Andrew's story.

"We are blown away and overwhelmed at the response it has gotten! We can't keep up with all the comments and messages! God has shined a light on this and our prayer is that it opens the eyes to other schools for their teen leadership to be proactive in reaching out to kids/teens who sit alone at lunch! Thank you for your support and kind words!" she wrote.

Students at many schools across the country have been taking initiative to ensure their schools become friendlier places for everyone. In Florida, students started a club called 'We Dine Together', and students in the club look for lonely kids at lunch.

Students will go up to kids sitting alone, introduce themselves and sit with them.
