Teachers At Elementary School Busted For Drug Use Before Class

Two elementary school teachers at a school in Virginia have been arrested for smoking marijuana and hashish in their offices. According to Fox News, the teachers, who worked in the physical education department, smoked together in their offices every single day.

To avoid suspicion, each teacher had a canister of strong air freshener in their desk that they would use to mask the distinctive smell, thereby avoiding any uncomfortable questions from students.

The two teachers, 25-year-old Luke Lloyd and 28-year-old Michael Diaddigo, were working at Taylor Elementary School when they were arrested by Virginia police. After police escorted the teachers to the backseat of a squad car, Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Diaddigo were charged with possession of a controlled substance (marijuana).

When school administrators were informed, both teachers were placed on temporary leave without pay and their teaching licenses were suspended.

Since the initial arrest, another teacher, who remains unnamed, has been placed on semi-formal administrative leave. According to NBC Washington, police learned that Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Diadiggo were smoking after receiving an anonymous tip, which most likely came from amongst the student or teacher body at Taylor Elementary School.

Specifically, the tip was received by the Arlington Police Department. Whenever a tip involves minors, Virginia’s police ensure that everything is strictly by the book. Prior to busting Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Diaddigo, Arlington Police officers secured a warrant for the offices and a warrant for a car belonging to one of the teachers.

To make the sting more efficient, the arresting officers were also accompanied by a drug sniffer dog. Unsurprisingly, the drug sniffer dog quickly found the contraband belonging to the teachers, with The Washington Post reporting that marijuana was found in a desk belonging to Mr. Diaddigo and in a smaller desk used by the unnamed teacher.

In an interview with NBC Washington, a spokesperson for the Arlington Police Department also dropped that bombshell fact that Mr. Diaddigo had been actively dealing marijuana on school grounds and regularly supplied other teachers with the illegal substance.

The principal of Taylor Elementary School, Harold Pellegreen, responded to questions from the local community in a lengthy letter to parents.

“As educators, we are obviously shocked and dismayed by this news, and our first concern has been for our students,” wrote Principal Pellegreen. “This is a disheartening situation for Taylor. Please be assured that we will continue to work together to ensure that Taylor’s students, families and staff are supported during this transition.”

Online commenters have reacted to the shocking announcement with a mixture of ambivalence and disgust. Other commenters, like ‘Chris7366’, wondered why it took so long for the teachers to be found out.

“I know several school teachers who have worked for 20+ years in public education. They have NEVER taken a drug test,” began ‘Christ7366’. “NOT a pre-employment, reasonable suspicion or random. Why do we test kids who are athletes or in BETA Club but NOT the teachers?”

Other users made light of the worrying events, with ‘FMDM75’ writing: “We had a high school teacher who was dealing drugs to the kids in his school. There's more than one way to get around low pay for teachers.”
