Weatherman Horrified By What He Finds Inside Food From Costco

A weatherman did some grocery shopping and purchased a routine item that you'll find on a lot of people's lists. After bringing the item home, he made a terrifying discovery.

He got some Del Monte bananas at a Costco in Nova Scotia and brought them home. His daughter found out that a stowaway had been smuggled into the house in the bananas, and the very thought of it is terrifying.

Nathan Coleman says his daughter was helping him to unpack the groceries when she spotted something dark on the bananas. The dad, who works for the Weather Network, told her that it was probably a slug and that she shouldn't worry about it.

His daughter and mother then urged him to take a closer look. It's a good thing he did.

“My mother was in the living room, too, and it was still squirming around in the bag and she said it might be a scorpion. I got up and looked at it and couldn’t believe it was a scorpion,” said Coleman.

Coleman double-bagged the scorpion and took it to the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History. They examined the small arachnid and determined that, for public safety reasons, it had to be euthanized.

Of course, he first snapped some pictures and shared them on social media. Coleman showed a photo of the scorpion in a box, next to a coin so that people could judge size. It's positively terrifying to think about.

"The scorpion had to be put down for safety reasons," he noted, much to the relief of people who cannot stand creepy-crawlies - especially venomous creepy-crawlies.

Some scorpions have venom so powerful that it can kill a human being, but they're a minority. All species are venomous, but don't let the size fool you. Some of the smallest scorpions can pack the most deadly punch, while some of the largest specimens will just inflict some pain without doing any long-term damage.

Scorpions are usually found in much warmer climates than Canada. But then again, that's where bananas also come from. The Del Monte bananas, a common supermarket chain brand, were imported from Guatemala.

Unfortunately, where produce grows, so do pests, usually. Which means scorpions can occasionally happen. Scorpions are not vegetarians, they actually eat other insects. However, they sometimes end up in a package of produce because they were feasting on other insects.

They also like to hide in piles of leaves.

In Maryland, a woman found a live scorpion in a closed bag of raw spinach. Thankfully she spotted it before she opened the bag and reach into it. The bag had been sitting in her fridge for two days before she went to make herself some lunch.

The woman initially thought the critter was a cricket, so she funneled it into a plastic water bottle she had on hand. After taking a closer look, she realized that it was a scorpion.

Her shocked husband says that the bag claims the product is 'triple washed'. They won’t be falling for that line again.
