Ms. Brenda Barattini, 26, was arrested after she cut off her boyfriend’s penis with a pair of gardening shears in Nueva Cordoba, one of the most trendy and fashionable parts of Argentina. Her partner, 40-year-old Sergio, was immediately rushed to the hospital, however, attempts to reattach his penis have reportedly failed.
Police and ambulance members were horrified when they were called to the house of Ms. Barattini after neighbors called and told them that Ms. Barattini had chopped off Sergio’s penis. While the motive behind the attack is not yet clear, Ms. Barattini’s lawyers have claimed that Ms. Barattini was a victim of sexual assault and cut off Sergio’s penis in self-defense.
“There’s justification for what happened,” Stated Ms. Barattini’s lawyer, Carlos Nayi. “The information I’ve received is that she was the victim of a sex attack.”
“She let him into her apartment because he’s someone who’s in a rock band and is an acquaintance of her brother but once inside, instead of removing a musical instrument as he was supposed to, he attacked her sexually and she assumed a defensive attitude. Whether or not she acted excessively is for the courts to decide.”
Sergio’s lawyer, Eduardo Perez, has disputed Ms. Nayi’s claim, stating, “I don’t understand what happened. This is someone I’ve known for a sometime. This was a peaceful encounter.”
Mr. Perez revealed that he believed Ms. Barattini and Sergio had been seeing each other for a number of months, adding, “they were in the middle of things. He wasn’t asleep. They began with a sexual game in which he was blindfolded.”
Ms. Barattini faces charges of wounding as the state prosecutor, Ms. Bettina Croppi, reveals that the injuries Sergio had suffered were “very serious”. Ms. Barattini is yet to give a statement and will not be formerly questioned until after her psychiatric evaluation. Tests have also been undertaken to determine whether Ms. Barattini was sexually assaulted or raped.
“It’s likely he’s lost the ability to father children,” Ms. Croppi confirmed before adding that the pair did, in fact, know each other, however it is unclear whether they were in a relationship.
“What I can say is that the man wasn’t tied up when police arrived,” Ms. Croppi continued. “He was helped by neighbors first and then by paramedics who arrived after the police.”
Ms. Barattini’s actions appear to be similar to those of Lorena Bobbitt, a woman who chopped her husband’s penis off with a kitchen knife while he slept in 1993. Ms. Bobbit had suffered years of abuse and rape at the hands of her husband, John.
When the trauma became too much to bear, Ms. Bobbitt allegedly used a kitchen knife to chop off her husband’s penis, before fleeing the scene and throwing the penis in a field. She later turned herself in to police.
Ms. Bobbitt was found not guilty due to insanity and was ordered by a judge to undergo a 45-day evaluation period at Central State Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia, after which she was released. Her husband, who was acquitted of rape, went on to have a short-lived career as a porn star.
