Woman Blown Away By Her Daughter's Flawless Kindness To Total Stranger

A mother and daughter were out enjoying a little girl time. The two had been shopping and stepped out of a store when the little girl noticed something on the curb that the mother had entirely ignored. What the little girl did next taught the mom, and many others, an important lesson.

Kenyatta Lewis said her daughter, 6-year-old Janiyah, noticed a homeless man on the street. Lewis, like so many adults, had learned to turn a blind eye to people suffering on the street a long time ago. How often do we walk past people huddled in a doorway or standing on the side of the road, half-starved, cold and suffering, worried about where they will be able to lay their heads down that night?

The little girl had not grown so cynical with the world yet that she could just put blinders on as she went past this man. She wouldn't let it go.

Janiyah noticed something that, again, most adults wouldn’t see as they walked by, self-trained to ignore such suffering. The man was crying.

The young girl approached him to find out what was wrong. "Hi sir, be happy, it's a nice day and it's not raining. Are you hot? Why don't you go home — the ground is dirty," Janiyah said.

The man explained to her that he had no home, and nowhere else to go. The sheer gravity of this situation seemed to take the little girl by surprise. Janiyah gazed at him with compassion. "So you have no food because you have no refrigerator?" she asked him.

Without a second thought, Janiyah handed the man her cold drink. Then she reached into her little purse and pulled out her savings, a few dollars she had stashed away. She gave it to the man and told him to go to a nearby McDonalds for something to eat. She told him she really liked McDonald’s and recommended it.

Janiyah's kindness inspired two more people passing by the homeless man. They came up to give him some money as well, so hopefully he ended up with enough to feed himself for a couple of days, or to rent a cheap room to get a good sleep.

Lewis allowed Janiyah to talk with the man for a few minutes, realizing something pretty special was unfolding before her eyes. The mother then was heartbroken to learn how the man ended up on the streets in such dire straits. He'd recently lost his wife in a fire. Not only was she killed, but everything he owned went up in the blaze.

It’s hard to imagine suffering from such a terrible loss, and makes it easy to understand how the man could have fallen into such a tragic fate. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a support system in place to help them bounce back after a tragedy like that, financially or emotionally.

Most of the time, when we pass homeless people, we don’t spend much time thinking about how they end up on the streets, but maybe we should all be a little more like Janiyah when it comes to our fellow man.

"A 6-year-old lead by example this morning," Lewis said in a Facebook post. "AWESOME! Kids see no color and that's exactly how it should be. It's not just a statement saying that the children are our future, it's a FACT. That gives me a little more hope for the world."
