Woman Had Tumors Weighing Nearly 80 Pounds; Surgeons Say She's Lucky She's Alive

A woman in India suffering from severe bloating and abdominal pain went to the hospital, and doctors were shocked by what they found. The woman had two giant ovarian tumors that were taking up some 80 percent of her abdomen, squeezing out her organs. Doctors performed surgery on the woman and removed the tumors, which had a combined weight of 78 pounds. They can't believe the woman survived for so long with the tumors.

Arati Adhikary, the 60-year-old patient, was suffering from terrible pain, but she had no idea what was causing it. She had been having trouble walking for a while, and was also always short of breath, but she never thought these things were related.

After getting to the hospital, the doctors performed an ultrasound scan, and were shocked. The scan revealed the massive tumors growing out of her ovaries. The tumors were so massive that they were crushing her liver, her diaphragm, pushing down on her pelvis and out on her rib cage.

Dr Mriganka Mouli Saha, assistant professor and gynecological surgeon at the College of Medicine & JNM Hospital in West Bengal, was the lead surgeon for the surgery.

"The patient had a huge abdominal swelling and was in lot of pain," the doctor told the Daily Mail. "She could not walk without any support and had respiratory problems as well. Two tumors were removed from her ovaries in a two-hour long operation. One was over 20kg and the other was around 15kg. The total weight of the tumors was 35.4kg (78lbs)."

To put the weight of the tumors in perspective, a newborn baby usually weighs about 7 lbs. A watermelon weighs about 20 pounds. A Labrador retriever can weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. That is a lot of weight to be carrying around.

The patient has been in the hospital for a week and is slated to be discharged next week. She's slowly but surely beginning to recover, but she's not out of the woods yet. One concern is whether the tumors are cancerous. A lab has been tasked with testing the massive growths.

Dr. Saha says the woman is very lucky to be alive right now, given the severity of her condition. Often, when things get that bad, even surgery isn't enough to save someone.

"It was a very risky operation. The patient could have collapsed during the surgery," he explained. "No such big ovarian tumor has been operated successfully in the country in the recent past."

If the tumor contains cancerous cells, this could be just the beginning of a battle for Ms. Adhikary. Ovarian cancer is potentially life-threatening, and the larger the tumors get, the more difficult the condition can be to treat.

If it turns out to be a benign cyst, however, then Adhikary might recover and go on to live a full and healthy life. Unfortunately, some of the symptoms she has experienced-- discomfort, pain, urgent need for urination, bloating, pain during sex and a change in menstruation-- are symptoms that can be caused by either a cyst or cancer, so a thorough examination of the large tumors is necessary for doctors to see just what they are dealing with.
