Woman Had Period For 5 Years, Finally Learns She Has Inherited Blood Disorder

A woman from Perth, Australia named Chloe Christos had her period continuously for five straight years.

The 27-year-old woman suffers from a bleeding disorder and her blood will not clot properly. When Chloe had her first menstrual period at 14, the bleeding never stopped.

“Day to day my life was literally being cared for by my mother,” Christos explained in an interview with the media.

She described her life: “I couldn’t do anything...I was fainting a lot, I had dangerously low blood pressure, and it wasn’t really a good idea for me to drive or go out. I really love being physically active, and that is what was most frustrating for me. Every single day I was in the sick bay at my school.”

Keep in mind that most women lose between 20 and 60 milliliters of blood during their period.

Moreover, bleeding 80 mL or more is a heavy bleed, and women who lose that amount of blood may have a condition called menorrhagia.

Christos would often lose more than 500mL of blood over four days.

The art director and stylist noted that her condition led to extreme anemia, and despite regular iron transfusions, her iron levels are very low.

Finally, Christos was diagnosed with an inherited bleeding disorder known as Von Willebrand disease.

According to Daily Mail, the disease causes a problem with a particular protein in the blood, which helps to control bleeding. Meaning, it will take longer for blood to clot and bleeding to stop.

In Christos's case, she had low levels of the blood clotting protein factor VIII.

She was given a synthetic drug to manage her condition. After several treatments with intolerable side effects, Christos contacted a hemophilia center in Adelaide and was a blood product usually prescribed to men who suffer from hemophilia was administered.

Miraculously, the treatment worked. Christos is given the blood product at the beginning of each cycle, and just recently, she had her first regular period that lasted the usual four to five days.
