Woman Wears This To Multiple Family Weddings - Faces Backlash

What to wear, what to wear… that seems to be a question with which women are constantly struggling. One thing is for sure, though: no matter what you wear out in public, someone, somewhere, will be judging you for it.

They’ll think it’s too sexy or too conservative, too expensive or too cheap, too dressy or too casual.

When you find something that works, a dress you love and feel good in, it’s not surprising that you’ll want to wear it over and over. Apparently, that is also a fashion faux pas—for women.

One woman in England was slammed for repeating her outfit at different family weddings.

She’s baffled by the double standard, because most men she knows wear the same suit time after time, and no one gives them any flak for it.

A woman on Mumsnet, a UK parenting website, sparked a massive debate when she wrote about a recent experience. She had attended a wedding recently, and the bride wasn't very happy with her choice of outfit.

The woman was shocked, and she wanted other opinions — and they came pouring in.

The unnamed woman, who uses the screen name GameOldBirdz, wrote that she'd been to a lot of weddings recently. "I wore the same outfit to three of these weddings. Two of these same-outfit weddings were the same crowd of people-- family," she explained.

After the wedding, her cousin emailed her to tell her, "It's a shame you couldn't be bothered to wear something different."

GameOldBirdz joked about being cheap, but the cousin responded with a long rant about wearing the same outfit being disrespectful and rude.

The cousin told her if she didn't want to go to the wedding, she 'should have declined the invitation rather than turn up inappropriately dressed.'

If the dress was appropriate for one wedding, it’s hard to imagine why it was inappropriate for another—other than the fact that it had been (gasp!) seen in public previously. But apparently, the bride was not alone in her feelings.

The poster said she asked her mother and was stunned when her mother agreed with the cousin. Now she is worried that she made a mistake and feels bad.

She wants to know if it's really wrong for women to wear the same outfit to different weddings.

Most people sided with the bewildered wedding guest, pointing out that the bride is the focus, not some guest wearing a dress she's worn before.

People also questioned what a woman is supposed to do if she can't go out and buy four brand new dresses for four different weddings.

It wasn't long before the discussion pointed out that there is a massive double-standard at play here: men wear the same suits, ties and shirts over and over, to one function after another. Why, then, is it so wrong for a woman to wear a dress more than once?

There were commenters who agreed with the cousin and mother, though, saying that they wouldn't be caught dead in the same outfit with the same people at events happening around the same time.

Others pointed out that it looks odd in the wedding photos for someone to keep showing up in the same dress.

The debate is raging on—what’s your opinion?
