Woman's Post About Rubber Band Burglar Goes Viral

As much as we try to protect our homes from theft, burglars still seem to adapt the ever-changing security technologies. Kim Cernigliaro is a Texas woman who had a brush with danger when a strange man started knocking on her door. Her instinct was that this was not someone friendly, so she waited for the man to leave. After 30 minutes, she opened her door to find a rubber band attached to it.

After the frightening incident, Kim posted the following, "Warning!!! Two weeks ago during the day, a hard knock was at my front door, not a regular knock but almost pounding, (honestly I thought that something may have happened to someone and they needed help) but something didn't feel right...and I DO NOT answer the door when I am here by myself."

She continued, "So don't bother! After several Knocks, they finally left. I glanced and could see it was a man through the stained glass of my door. After about 30 minutes I walked outside to look for what I thought would be a brochure, but instead found a rubber band around my knob to hold the door open when I unlocked the latch."

Kim said that the sheriff stopped by her home the following day and said that this suddenly started happening in her area. He explained that robbers will place a rubber band around the knob of a door so that when you turn the knob and the door unlocks they can bust in on you.

If you find yourself wanting extra protection, one thing you can do is reinforce all of your doors. The kicking in method is often used. In addition, if you are out of town, have someone check your mail for you. Thieves pay attention to stacked and unattended mail.

Also, leave your valuables in unlikely places such as a child's room. If you don't have the budget for a state-of-the-art security system, post a security sign in front of your door. Last but not least, keep the outside of your home well lit. Thieves try to stay away from the light as much as possible.
