With today being #MusicMonday and all, we wanted to give you a special treat! We recently sat down with R&B songstress Amerie and asked her about her new album In Love & War. You know we also had to dig a bit into her personal life as well.

In this interview, the songstress talks about being a Def Jam artist, gives advice on dating, how to deal with breakups, and much more. Continue reading to check out our interview with the fabulous Amerie:

Life @ Def Jam

ATF: So how does it feel to be a Def Jam Recording artist? It has to be such an honor to be on that legendary label.

Amerie: It sounds like you need to be a Def Jam artist (laughs)…But no seriously, It’s really great. It feels awesome to be over there now. I’m really happy with the new situation. The team is great; working with L.A. Reid is just wonderful all in itself. He’s a legend and he’s just amazing. I love working with someone who is passionate about music and what he does. LA looks at things from a creative stand point.

ATF: So why did you decide to make that jump to Def Jam? Columbia is looked at as a well rounded label, while
Def Jam is known for their heavy rap influence.

Amerie: I just felt people at a urban level would more understand the temperature. They understand the direction and the timing of things. Not that people at Sony didn’t, I just feel some of the ideas on how to approach certain things are better. I am now working with people who really live and breathe the music and the culture.

ATF: Okay, so you know coming from Columbia, their sole attention has always been Beyonce, and you had to compete with that. Now you head over to Def Jam where they have Rihanna and Mariah Carey. So where do you think you fit in at Def Jam around these “heavy weights”?

Amerie: Well you know were just very different. Mine and Mariah Carey’s music is very different as so is mine and Rihanna’s music. The thing I like about the label was that I didn’t feel any pressure. Every artist is really appreciated for their own individual sound and style. It’s really a great place to be creative.

Story Behind “In Love & War”

ATF: So what is the production like on this album? In Love & War is a very strong title.

Amerie: The concept of it was just pretty much going though the hard times and the growing pains of a relationship. There is no idealized notion of a relationship on the album. The album was going to be called Break Up to Make Ups but that changed after I wrote the song In Love & War with Warren Campbell. The album is a very Hip Hop, Soul, Rock fusion.

ATF: So where did you get inspiration for this album? Usually artist draw inspiration for their personal lives. Is that true for you?

Amerie: Most of it were things that I have been through in the past in my relationships. A couple of them were things that my closest girl-friends have went through. All of it is very very real. That’s why I think the album is so relate-able.

ATF: So is the album a little bit of male bashing or it is more like empowering for women?

Amerie: Is there really such a thing has male bashing? You tell me who has male bashing song.

ATF: I’ll take it back to Destiny’s Child “Writings on the Wall” album. That album was full of songs against men.

Amerie: I don’t think they were male bashing. They were just telling it like it is. But I do want to say no my album is not full of male bashing songs. The songs are unisex, they cane be from a woman to a man or vice versa.

Amerie Gets Personal

ATF: So what is the “girl-talk” about with some of your close female friends?

Amerie: It’s usually about men. We talk about the stuff you guys have done (laughs). We are constantly giving advice to one another about our relationships.

ATF: So we haven’t really seen Amerie’s name in the headliners or on blogs. Why do you avoid high profile relationships or industry guys?

Amerie: I don’t have a thing against industry guys, I just think its hard to date someone who does what you do. The schedules would just pull you apart some much. Someone has to always be able to see the other person. But if your both on your separate tours it makes things difficult.

ATF: So what type of guy do you seek?

Amerie: I just want a man I can be myself with. I’m not really big into looks; I’ve never really been into looks. People use to always accuse me of falling for the funny looking guy. I would say I just like character, someone who has personality. That guy that may not be on the cover GQ, probably had more time to develop a personality and some smarts. He really doesn’t have to just rely on his looks to get a girl. I just like men who know themselves and are confident. Sometimes I can be really dorky like playing computer games and reading Harry Potter. I want someone who likes me for me.

Amerie Gives Advice To The Ladies

ATF: What type of advice could you give a girl going through a new breakup?

Amerie: The best advice I can give a woman going through a breakup with a man is to find a new one (laughs). That’s probably not the best advice, but there is something to that. Its not always good because you may just go for the opposite of what you had already. Its bad because you only really chose the new guy because he was so much different than the old one. Its best to just pretend the relationship never happen in all honesty. Just take the time to reflect about the decision you made and make better ones next time around.

ATF: Okay so how about someone who is getting into a new relationship?

Amerie: I would say just take things slow, I know that’s easier said then done though. When you first get into something everything is just so excited and you just want to see that person all the time. But you just need to take your time and learn your partner. All the red flags may be popping up but your too busy having fun with them.

ATF: What advice can you give a man pursuing a woman?

Amerie: All women love being swept off our feet. I don’t know one female that doesn’t love that. We love romance and we love taking our time with things.

ATF: So what are Amerie’s THREE favorite break up songs?

“I Hate You So Much (Right Now)” by Kelis when you really mad and fed up.

“Conceited” by Remy Ma just to uplift you and make you feel sexy again.

“Beautiful Ones” by Prince because the beautiful ones hurt you all the time.

Amerie In Closing

ATF: Why should people by In Love & War?

Amerie: The album sounds great. I really love the energy. There aren’t many albums that has a fusion of all these genres on one album. Lyrically the album is a story of a relationship. Anyone could totally relate to this project. The album is just very real!

Janet Jackson and Boris Kodjoe didn’t get those gorgeous bodies and abs from good genes—they have celebrity trainer Dolvett Quince to thank. Quince is a well known fitness celebrity trainer who started his first martial arts class at 11 years old and is now a master in Jujitsu and Tae Kwon Do.

New Yorkers are all about work during the day, and party at night– a lot of us don’t have time to work out at the gym. So, we caught up with Dolvett and asked a few questions like

How can woman can a woman stay fit without hitting the gym 3 times a week?

Read the rest of the interview to learn some fitness tricks and more about Dolvett Quince.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Dolvett Quince: I was born in Stanford, Connecticut and now reside in Atlanta, GA. I own an exclusive fitness studio and I’m an actor and model

How long have you been into body building/personal training?

Dolvett Quince: 10 yrs

When was it that you started Body Sculptor inc? We hear that they have a live DJ playing and intense but fun work outs! What makes this place unique from the rest of the work out centers in ATL?

DQ:I started Body Sculptor Inc in 2003. People always compliment our energy, it definitely sets us apart from the rest.

We hear you train many celebs. Can you name a few that you’ve worked with and tell us some of your experiences working with celebs.

DQ: Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker…helped them stay lean and fit between and during their various projects. I have also been training NFL free agent tight end Daniel Wilcox, an 8th year tight end who last played for Baltimore Ravens, and his wife Shauna Wilcox.

Living in New York City most people are about work , work, work, and many women complain that they don’t have the time to work out. We always hear women saying that they try to eat right and follow a certain diet without exercise. What would you say about that?

DQ: If you have time to work, work, work then you have time to work on your health/body

How can a hard working woman that works over 60 hours a week fit a work out plan in her schedule?

DQ: I created a dvd specifically with that in mind…it’s a complete workout in 30min and the only equipment you need is a chair! It’s called ‘Me & My Chair: The No Excuses Workout’

How important is it to stay fit and keep exercising?

DQ: It is imperative to your health and longevity, maintaining energy throughout your day, and it’s a great outlet/release

For people that don’t have time to join a gym, what would you suggest?

DQ: The ‘Me&My Chair’ dvd is an excellent choice…it’s a low-impact, high intensity 30-minute workout system that helps you tone up and slim down using only a household chair as equipment. I packed it full of helpful advice, encouragement, and even nutrition tips- and it’s under 25 bucks. With the economy in its current state, providing people with cost effective ways to stay in shape is very important to me.

Do you plan on expanding Body Sculptor Inc? Possibly bringing it to New York City?

DQ: Absolutely. I look forward to bringing BSI to New York City as well as other cities in the near future. In the meantime, look us up when you come to Atlanta or check out my website www.bodysculptorinc.com

Young R&B singers come a dime a dozen, but Teairra Mari has always stood out from the pack. The former Princess of Rocafella, held it down for the young girls that didn’t care what people had to say. Teairra Mari has always spoke the truth and wasn’t afraid of the repercussions.

The R&B songstress is gearing up to release another album, and she ain’t changing for anyone. During her interview with ATF, Teairra spoke on relationships, fashion, rumors circluation around her, and the making of her new album At That Point.

Continue reading to check out the interview.

ATF: Hey there Teairra!

Teairra Mari: Hey, how are you?

ATF: I’m good, so we hear you have a new album going up.

TM: Yeah I sure do. The album is called “At That Point”, which will be in stores October 20th of this year. I have features from Nicki Minaj, Pleasure P, Flo-Rida, Rick Ross. I also worked with a few producers, Rico Love and The Runners just to name a few.

ATF: Tell us how was it working with The Mistress, Nicki Minaj?

TM: It was great, I loved working with her. She is actually like really funny. When I heard the space for a rapper on the track “Automatic”, I knew she would be perfect for it. I thought off her right off the back. So you know I sent her the record and she sent it back to me that same day.

ATF: So what are some of your favorite tracks off the album?

TM: “Automatic” with Nicki Minaj and this song called “Emergency“. I love the whole album but those our my favorites this week (Laughs).

ATF: You know your last album was very rough and “tell it like is”. You even got a stamp on it warning listeners.

TM: Well this one I am still doing the same but in a more adult kind of way. No Parental Advisory Sticker this time, I’ve learned to express myself without cursing. I use to curse like a sailor in high school. That album was truly a reflection of who I was at the time.

ATF: What is your musical lane right now with this new project?

TM: It’s the same. Still Teairra Mari, just a lil older. I’m more experienced, so I have more to talk about this time around.

STYLE

ATF: So describe Teairra’s personal style…

TM: It’s very girly-girl, very lace and pearl. I love big beautiful rings and necklaces.

ATF: So what is your fashion addiction? When you go to the mall what is the first thing you look for?

TM: Shoes! I have like a shoe obsession.

ATF: So who are some of your favs?

TM: Manolo Blahnik, Giuseppe, Gucci, oh and Betsy Johnson too.

STYLE TIPS from Teairra Mari

If you have a big necklace, it’s best to wear just stud earrings. If you love bangals put them all on one arm and keep the other one nice and clean. You can place a ring on that opposite arms hand. Its never good to look like you are doing too much.

I learned this one from Tyra Banks. Always have a pair of nice earrings, lip gloss, and a big pair of shades in your purse. Even if you look disgusting and you have those three items you will always look presentable.

Famous Quote – “Why would she ever go there? Keep my name out your mouth, sweetie.” Teairra Mari towards Rihanna

TM: I didn’t mean it in a negative way, it actually was in a print magazine. So people took it out of context. But you know that situation is so dead to me. It’s like it wasn’t a big deal at all. I was actually just being funny, that’s just how I talk. I am from Detroit and we be like “Un ,Un sweetie, keep my name out ya mouth Boo!” That’s just how I talk when I am being funny. So that’s all that was about

ATF: What do you and your girl-friend talk about?

TM: We talk about everything from hair and make-up to boys. At this point in my life I am on this whole positive kick. We just made up a saying actually.

ATF: You had the single “Hunt 4 U”, so what man is Teairra on the hunt for?

TM: A clean guy, a respectful guy, you gotta have street creditability, and style; it doesn’t have to be over the top. I like simple at the same time stylist.

ATF: So when you do find you perfect man, how does he keep you?

TM: Just remain the same man I fell in love with. It’s simple, stay clean, stay swagged out, and stay on the grind.

The R&B group Brutha is tired of being under-rated and over looked. They originally obtained commercial fame from having their own hit reality show on BET Brothers to Brutha, but that same show also seemed to have distracted viewers from their music. The Def Jam Records signees are now fighting for their voices to be heard among the stiff competition among boy bands. We chatted with the guys about how they dealt with Shakir Stewart’s (Def Jam) untimely death, being inspired by The Jackson 5, and their thoughts on Day26. We also put them through the “rumor mill”. Check out everything after the jump…

ATF: So how have you guys been doing?

Brutha: We been doing great just grinding. The last project didn’t do as good as we hoped it would do. So we’ve been grinding it out to make sure that this next project is perfect. The album is coming really, really soon. It’s all about this music man.

ATF: So what has been the biggest change thus far with making this new album?

Brutha: Well first off, this album is more us. We weren’t allowed to be ourselves on the last album. But this time we have made a great body of work. So people are going to now here what we have inside.

ATF: So what is the production like on this album?

Brutha: This album is full on baby making music. (Laughs). We got Rick Ross on the album. The album is basically the stories of our lives.

ATF: So is their going to be a second season of the show, Brother to Brutha?

Brutha: Um No. We aren’t really focusing on reality shows right now. We are just focusing on our music. Last time we focused on that show and it kind of took away from the music. It’s just 100% about the music now.

ATF: So do you think that being on a reality show was a smart thing to do?

Brutha: Well yeah because it got us out there and got our foot in the door. It served its purpose then but we are on a different page now.

ATF: Now we know that Shakir Stewart of Def Jam was a big driving force behind you guys at Def Jam Records. How do you feel being at Def Jam without him being around anymore?

Brutha: It’s definitely hard without Shake being around. He was not only apart of our project, he was like family to us. We grew really close to him and learned a lot from him. It’s hard but he would want us to keep it pushing you know.

ATF: So where do you see Brutha in the next 5 years?

Brutha: Well we hope to still be making music and singing together. You know a lot of groups break-up when the get successful. We want to stay together and at least put out an album a year. We want to tour across the world and perform in front of millions of people.

ATF: So with the recent passing of Michael Jackson everyone memories of him are all over the place. A lot of people remember Jackson 5, which is pretty similar to you guys being that your all brothers. What did the Jackson 5 and MJ mean to Brutha?

Brutha: Man the most! The Jackson family period meant a lot to us. Our father use to make us copy everything Mike would do. He made us all learn the song “ABC” front to back. The Jackson 5 was the first inspiration for us.

ATF: So besides the Jackson 5, what other groups blue print do you follow?

Brutha: Most definitely Jodeci, also Boyz II Men and New Edition. We were influenced by every group that was considered great. Our dad was big on teaching us who the greats were.

ATF: Now you know there aren’t many groups that are out right now, besides like Day26. Who is really shutting it down right now. They just won Best Group at the BET Awards. What do you feel about being compared to them?

Brutha: There really is no comparison. We are brothers; we have been together since we were little. They are actually a manufactured group. You know they gotta eat and we gotta eat. Our goal is to take over the lane and that’s what we gotta do. We don’t think any of these groups messing with Brutha right now. We are taking it to another level. It ain’t no comparison to those guys and us. They gonna have to respect us at the end of the day.

ATF: Sounds like a MTV vs. BET rivalry to me.

Brutha: (Laughs) what ever you say man.

Rumor Mill

ATF: Now speak on this age mess Anthony.

Anthony: You know what man I always answers questions about that our first time around we aren’t even focused on that now. It’s like the age who cares. We just want people to focus on our music.

ATF: I am going to take that as a no comment. But readers mind are going to wonder.

Anthony: I hope not, I hope they just focus on our music.

ATF: Now another rumor that I have heard was that Grady was gay, down low, bi-sexual, whatever. Can you speak on those rumors?

Grady: The rumors are untrue. I am heterosexual! I love women and only women. Print that! We are all players, that’s not even a question worth answering.

R&B music has a new girl on the block, that has already caught the eye of, not only us, but of R&B powerhouse, Ryan Leslie as well. Krys Ivory is a young church girl that made her way to the R&B/Pop world like a lot of talented singers with the same background, but the thing that makes Krys so different is the fact that she has survived the ultimate battle, Cancer. Check out more about this talented and inspirational woman after the jump…

ATF: Now tell us a little bit about your start in the music game?

Krys Ivory: Well I grew up singing in my church at my dad’s homeless ministry. But I was 11 years old when I got my real taste in the music game when I joined a gospel group called “All Gods Children“. We got this great opportunity to sing back up for Barbara Streisand for an event and it forever changed my life. After meeting Barbara I knew that singing was the profession for me. No doubt about it (laughs)

ATF: We are curious, so tell us more about you background in music?

KI: I grew up singing in a black Baptist church called Mount Zion in Inglewood, CA where my father was the deacon. Then after that church was no longer there my father began to pastor his own homeless ministry in Hollywood. He would have me sing for the homeless every Sunday. The people who attended my father’s service were so humbled and grateful for my shared gift. It touched me in a major way. Besides the fact that my dad is also vocally inclined, He has a Motown background from when he worked for Motown Records in the late 60’s and early 70’s. So I was practically was born into it!

ATF: So how did you go from little ole church girl to getting in the hands of Ryan Leslie?

KI: I met Ryan Leslie because his business partner Rasheed Richmond hit me up on MySpace after hearing my music and offered me a chance to record a demo for him. I did of course and the first song we cut “Next 2 Ya” ended up being my single, it all happened super fast.

ATF: After doing so research on you, I heard that you had to recently deal with cancer. Let’s talk about that experience.

KI: Yeah well I was just about to get signed with Ryan Leslie; he was going to take me overseas with my project. I was so ready to go! But life brought me to a HAULT and I was diagnosed with Hodgekins Lymphoma. I had to stop and focus on my health. I lost my hair during the process from the chemo, but I gained so much more internally. God got me through it! And Ryan Leslie still signed me!

ATF: How has going through that tragic experience affected your music and outlook on life?

KI: It has made me a whole lot more spiritually sensitive! My music speaks a whole lot more honestly now. I don’t regret my battle.

ATF: This a questions that we can’t avoid. You are going to be compared to Cassie a lot because of linking up with Ryan, how are you going to deal with that?

KI: It doesn’t bother me, it won’t be an issue for long because I feel people will quickly see that we are both two different type of artist.

ATF: Do you think NextSelection was the right place for you to go, being that Ryan Leslie is an artist himself?

KI: It’s an emotional roller coaster ride in this industry but I am always completely honest with myself. There will always be a conflict within a label. I respect Ryan’s grind as an artist as he does mine, but I’ve learned that it’s in my power to make things happen regardless of where I am signed. I just feel so blessed that I have an amazing team! Rich Dollaz and KLPR Group. I can’t forget Danni Rouge and Allie Marquee my stylist. I will never give up or stop!

ATF: Describe your music to us…

KI: Imagine Teena Marie, Mary J. Blige, and Beyonce had a love child…That is what I’m aiming for my album to sound like! (laughs). My music can have a nice melodic groove to it. I feel like my vocals makes people wanna chill out. Or at least that’s what I am aiming for.

ATF: What separates you from other pop singers?

KI: I’m not compromising my integrity as a woman to rise to the top. My music needs to speak for itself.
ATF: How did you come up with your name, if it isn’t your birth name?

KI: Krys (pronounced Chris) is short for Krys-tina…And Ivory is who I am. I’m a strong and precious commodity to come by.

ATF: That was cute.

KI: Yeah I think so too (laughs)

ATF: What are you bringing to the music game, that we have no seen before?

ATF: Hey wassup Sammie

Sammie: How You doing Ian?

ATF: I’m good man. So what you been up to lately?

Sammie: Well I just did the song, Kiss Me Through the Phone with Soulja Boy. I have been working on my mixtape, Swag n B Vol. 1, with DJ Holiday. I got Cassidy on it, Yung Joc, Trey Songz, just to name a few. I’m just tryna expand as an artist and show a different side of me. I feel with this economy you have to give the people a free album before the actual album, so they can see how you coming. I am also working on my new album Coming Of Age also.

ATF: So what inspired you to want to do a mixtape? A lot of R&B guys don’t really go down that lane you know.

S: Yeah that’s the beauty of it. A lot of R&B dudes don’t do it because it takes talent. Not every R&B dude can do it. The main guy that you really know who does mixtapes and remixes is Trey Songz; aside from him you don’t really see a lot of guys doing it. You see, a lot of people don’t know I write, I’m not just a singer. I feel like I can creatively remix something that is already out on the radio and make it R&B. Me being young you have to challenge yourself. After putting out a few songs on twitter and getting a lot of positive feedback I just decided to put out a mixtape.

ATF: So you have worked with Soulja Boy and Trey Songz, and now they currently have a song out right now together. How was it working with both of them?

S: It was crazy man! Trey is like my big brother to be honest with you. A lot of people don’t know how gifted he is. He actually engineers and records himself. That’s something that I am learning to do. The chemistry like I was crazy. We bust the song out in less than an hour. And there not a lot of times you see two R&B guys collab and it be nothing but positive. It just makes sense ya know. He is more in that R.Kelly lane, and I think I am more in that pretty boy Usher lane. So I think it was a nice balance between the both of us. You know working with Soulja Boy was just dope. He already had “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” done with him singing on auto-tune, but he hated how he sounded. So he hit me up and I came through and knocked it out in 15 minutes. Fast forward a couple months later, we have the number one record in the country.

ATF: Speaking of Kiss Me Thru The Phone, is there anyone you are kissing through the phone these days?

S: (Laughs) Naw I’m single you know. So if there was a girl I was texting or kissing through the phone, she wouldn’t feel too special right about now. I do sometimes have that one person when I am out on the road that I miss. I think a lot of dudes can relate to that song, it just wasn’t for the females. But me I’m single, and my priorities are really God first, family, then music. As far as females you would have to be really understanding to really be involved with me.

ATF: What is the most special thing about a female to you?

S: Well for one we can’t live without them. It’s something about them being nurturing, and I just love everything about a woman. From the way she talks, the way she smells, to the way she carries herself. I notice that the girls that I actually go for have the same qualities that my mother has.

ATF: So now describe how Sammie is in a relationship?

S: When I am gone and really sprung over a girl, I can be a real R&B dude. You know I’ll send her flowers just because it’s Tuesday. I listen pretty well, she probably wouldn’t even have to ask for something you really want. I may here her talking to a friend about something, then I’ll go buy it. My job is just to make that girl happy, in any way shape, form, or fashion. I am like really ALL IN once I really dig a girl.

ATF: Okay so when was the last time you were in a serious relationship?

S: Like in 05, my senior year in high school. That was my first love, my first everything. That was when I like test the waters with the whole relationship thing and being in love.

ATF: So it’s been awhile for you I see. So how does a woman get at Sammie? How does a female get your attention?

S: Just don’t pay me any attention. If you see me in the club and you see a bunch of girls trying to get at me and u don’t pay me no mind. That’s the woman that will get me. Since I was like 12 I never really had to approach women, just from me being on television they come to me.

Name Game/Favorite Things

Favorite Record Right Now: R.Kelly – Number One featuring Keri Hilson

Favorite Female Artist of Right Now: Keri Hilson

Favorite R&B Male Artist of Right Now: Trey Songz

ATF: Whose career do you mock yours after?

S: I am following the Usher blue print, he is one of the only R&B artist that is still relevant today that actually came from a child star like myself, to be the grown man that he is today. That’s really the formula I am tryna follow. He really set the path for other R&B cats of my era. You know I didn’t grow up watching Michael Jackson, I watched usher. Usher grew up watching Mike, but Usher is my MJ you see.

Name: Marc Clark
Age: 23
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Zodiac Sign: Pieces

ATF: So let’s get this started man.

Marc Clark: Yeah I’m ready.

ATF: What inspires you to do what you do?

MC: Creativity, and my deep desire to be innovative. Since as long as I can remember I have always had a love for art and was inspired by beautiful things (laughs), In fact I have a weakness for beautiful things. This appreciation for art and beauty has fueled my passion for designing fashion.

ATF: Another thing that must inspire you has to be other people in fashion. So who are some of your fashion icons?

MC: There are a few individuals in the world of fashion that can be considered Icons, however the ones that have inspired me the most will be honored in my inaugural launch of Fashion Icon t-shirts as part of my fall/winter 09′ Collection. This season I am honoring Anna Wintour, Grace Jones, Andre Leon Tally, and Valentino.

ATF: Those are some big role models mister.

MC: Yeah I was really inspired by those innovative people.

ATF: So how did you come up with these bow ties?

MC: “It was all a dream!” (laughs) It was actually inspired by a very vivid dream I had where recoding artist Lady Gaga was wearing a bowtie that I created. I have always been a big fan of bowties, but never before designed one. I thought it a very novel and classic fashion piece, so I took some canvas and designed my first prototype bowtie. I played with the design for a quite a while until I perfected it, and turned it into what you see today.

ATF: Cool. I know you did not just pick up a pencil and start sketching, what is some of your background in fashion?

MC: Prior to launching Marc C. in April 2009, I was a co-creator and Director of Marketing / Relations for a boutique clothing company with designs in over 50+ stores nationwide. Prior to that, while attending college, I was the director of numerous fashion shows in Universities throughout the Maryland Metropolitan area, and Creative Director of a non-profit organization called, Teen’s Count, which held an annual High School Fashion battle show sponsored by local radio stations and national television networks.

ATF: You aren’t new to the game at all (laughs). Speaking of your collection, tell us three people you would love to rock your designs?

MC: That’s a hard question, because I want everyone with style and sophistication to rock my designs. Three people who stand out to me who I see rocking my designs are Marc Jacobs, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga, because they have impeccable fashion, and a great sense of style!

ATF: Success, Love, or Money if you had to choose one, which would it be?

MC: In the words of Lady Gaga “That’s a ridicules question; I would rather cut my leg off than choose!” I choose Success, Love and Money, because all three contribute to keeping me happy, which fuels my inspiration as a designer.

ATF: Good answer man, we love Lady Gaga at AllThatsFab.com. So how would you define FASHION?

MC: Fashion to me is about innovation, about wearing your personality on the outside. Not being afraid, display character and takes risks. Fuck what people think, be yourself and put your style on cruise on control and let your fashion evolve.

ATF: That phrase needs to sold and placed on your next t-shirt.

MC: Maybe it will you never know (laughs)

ATF: Cool Cool, so what designers do you respect?

MC: Raf Simons, Martin Margiela, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Betsey Johnson, and Jeremy Scott.

ATF: Now how did you get the fashion maven Estelle to rock piece from your collection?

MC: Estelle is an amazingly artistic individual, who took a liking to the Marc C. Bowtie Brooch. It was a refreshing feeling seeing her rocking my design.

ATF: Estelle is so unique and original, any designer should be happy to see her in their stuff. Do you like designing for women or men better?

MC: I do not have a preference; I have created a unisex line of bow tie brooches. I design fashion forward designs for everyone, so if it appeals to a guy or a girl, I’m flattered at the end of the day.

ATF: Where does your creativity come from?

We are always supporters of strong, independent, dynamic females. We are constantly showcasing up & coming men in the entertainment industry, but now we are bringing you some women that are doing their thing in the big city. “Fab Females” will give you the chance to get to know some ladies that are taking charge and making moves in a male dominated world.

Our first ATF Fab Female is none other than Briana Marie of Harlem Heights. She is a fashion designer who is making her own lanes. Briana is not just a reality star, she is a woman with goals and aspirations. After reading this interview, you’ll see why Briana was chosen to be one of NYC’s fab females..

Name: Briana Marie
Age: 28
Location: New York City by way of Atlanta, GA
Zodiac Sign: Taurus (In every way from what I was told…lol)

ATF: So tell me what inspires you to do what you do?

Briana Marie: I think when you’ve wanted to do a certain thing as long as you can remember, that dream wakes you up every day. You push more and climb higher to reach it.

ATF: Now I know there are a few people you have to admire, Who are some of your fashion icons?

BM: Icon is a word a lot of people use loosely for the wrong reasons.

ATF: Agreed (laughs)

BM: (laughs) But for me there are a few:

Diana Ross. She transcending the defined the word ‘Diva’ by making breakthroughs for Black Women in music, film, and fashion. Mahogany has always been an inspiring movie for me, because like me she left her home and the Man she loved to pursue her ultimate dream. And that is one of the biggest sacrifice you can make.

Karl Lagerfeld. He rebuilt the House of Chanel and elevated Fendi. He has the world in his hands but is not jaded and leads a very simplistic life. True genius!

My Parents. They started dating at 20 and were an extremely fabulous power couple. In the 80’s they took fashion to another level. With matching Burberry trench coats, and scarves, YSL suits, and family photos with Lacoste Polos. I thought everyone’s mother wore a Louis Vuitton bag. They loved to experiment with looks and taught me about trends at a very young age.

ATF: What made you jump into designing bags?

BM: From a young age bags were my thing. For some girls it’s shoes or make up. For me I’ve always been a fiend for designer bags. In middle school I rocked Dooney & Burke and Coach. High school my Mothers vintage Gucci that she wore in her college days. Then when I got to college, I went nuts with a designer bag collection today up to almost 80. One month 3-1/2 years ago I bought 3 Fendi bags and Bridget (Harlem Heights cast member and cousin) gave me an intervention. She said with my eye and design talent I needed to quit wasting money and make my own bags. That’s where the Signature Tassel Hobo was born. It was entered in a bag design contest on Glam.com for Marie Claire Magazine. I was chosen as a finalist so I knew I was on to something.

ATF: This is a question I have to ask you, how has Harlem Heights effected your life thus far?

BM: I still wake up and put on my clothes and get on my grind like every other day before the show. It’s just now a lot of people know my face. It has been extremely humbling when people say I inspire them. Since day one my main goal was to give a face to a part of the fashion industry no one sees. There are so many who work tirelessly without so much as a thank you to bring the world beautiful clothes for someone else’s vision. If that inspires another person to go for their dream then my sacrifice was worth it.

ATF: Tell us some of your background in fashion.

BM: I moved to New York in 2002, and graduated with a Fashion Design degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology. I came straight out of college and became an outerwear designer for ESPRIT and Laundry by Shelli Segal. During my time there I won some industry awards and spreads in magazines like In Style and Outerwear Magazine. I left there to become a Technical Designer for Victoria’s Secret Pink. Now I have started to develop my own brand B. Marie.

ATF: I see you are very accomplished female, you have been around the block haven’t you?

BM: Yes I have paid my dues (laughs)

ATF: So what celebrities would you love to see wearing one of your bags?

BM: Kelis is one of my all time favorite style mavens, and Nicole Richie’s Bohemian look works for my denim bags. Taylor Momson (Jenny from Gossip Girl), and love Dawn Richard from Dirty Money’s new punk look. There are many more that’s just a few. I think it’s more than celebrities; I just want a fab girl who has carefree style to enjoy my line.

ATF: Has being on reality television made people lose respect for you?

BM: Not at all! The people that know me and have been truly down for me since day one have always respected my honesty and hustle. If anything I think I gained more respect from them by opening my world to everyone and staying grounded.

ATF: So Briana what made you want to move to the Big Apple?

BM: Fashion. I left a very comfortable, fun, and glamorous life behind to start from the bottom. Any move you make to accomplish a goal is emotionally challenging. There were plenty of times I could have given up. But I ate the battle wounds and kept fighting. New York is the hardest city to make it in the world. And I respect those that at least try. It’s not a place for everyone, only the strongest survive.

ATF: That is such a true statement about New York. So describe your personal style for us?

BM: That question is always hard to answer because I never stay in the same lane. My style changes with the weather, so I guess it’s how I feel when I wake up.

ATF: What bag do you love the most out of your line?

BM: The Signature bag for sure because it was my first. I have reworked it at least 50 times to get it just right. And will probably change the design some more in seasons to come.

ATF: Now here is your chance to squash any rumor that is floating out there about you…?

BM: That I’m a self proclaimed ‘bitch’, that back stabs her friends. That might be what others want people to think of me. But it’s as far from the truth as possible. I am a loving daughter, big sister to two girls Tiffany and Carolyn. I have strong southern morals, and I’m an extremely loyal person to the people I call friends. In a way that trait might be my biggest weakness, because I take that term serious. When it comes to meeting new people I am very nice but cautious. I’m cool with you until you give me a reason not to. I never let a person disrespect or run me over. The major mistakes I’ve made living here were trusting people without doing my complete homework. I also have a very cool demeanor, and at times an emotionless face. I’m always thinking, so it’s not that I look mean, I’m focused.

ATF: Tell us about your brand new web site, and what was the inspiration for it?

BM: My website B. Marie has been up since April with my collection displayed, a few articles, and a video on me. I have given it some more interactive sections to dig into the fashion side of me. I wrote a blog on bet.com for my show. Now I have added a blog called ‘Southern Girl and the City Style’ that chronicles some of the events of my life in the city. There are funny stories, pictures, and sketches of my work.

I also added a style section that highlights the upcoming trends, how to wear, and buy them online. I have lived in KC, Dallas, and Seattle. When a new trend hits NYC, it takes another year and a half to two years to make it to that city. This gives places like the Midwest an outlet to keep up with what’s hot now.

ATF: Who is Briana Marie?

BM: Real and hard working.

ATF: What made you want to do Harlem Heights instead of a show like Project Runway?

BM: Project Runway is a competition, Harlem Heights was my life. It’s hard enough grinding in my daily life than trying to do it with 14 other people. I just want to be me, and launch my line around my supporters.

AllThatsFab.com has decided to revamp our Fab Men section. We’ve brought you men from all different parts of the industry, such as fashion, film, music, etc..Just to give you all something different we are bringing you a double feature. Our newest edition to the Fab Men are New York’s DJ Boy Wonda & Panama. They are taking you back to the DJ & rapper combo we all grew to love when Run DMC and Will Smith & Jazzy Jeff brought it to the forefront. No more Q&A interviews!! After the jump you can catch the footage of the interview with Panama & DJ Boy Wonda…

ATF’s Ian Jarrell met up with the guys on the streets of NYC to bring you that really New York vibe, so we filmed these guys on the streets of NY. DJ Boy Wonda is well known mixtape DJ in NYC, and we wouldn’t be surprised if our readers have more than one copy of his mixtapes in their CD collection right now! If Panama looks familiar, you’ve probably seen him star in the HBO hit show “The Wire“— the actor turned rapper is making sure he doesn’t leave this world without making a mark on music.

ATF: So how did you come up with your names and how did you get your start in the industry?

Now you know we have to give the ladies something. Women always want to know what guys look for in a lady. Sometimes it’s not always about the physical appearance. These guys are looking for a little something different.

ATF: What is your relationship status and what do you look for in a woman?

Fab Men Favorite Things: Music & Dating Edition

Music is not a easy game to break into, you have to have a love for what you do. Music inspires many of us, it helps with break-ups, getting ready for a party, and can simply brighten up your dar. We want to know what inspires Boy Wonda and Panama to love music, they are a rapper and a DJ after all…

We hope you enjoy our newest edition of Fab Men. Stay tuned for many more guys, you never know who we are going to bring to you….
