Exclusive Interview: Catching Up with Ryan Leslie

Ryan Leslie is a singer/songwriter/producer who has worked with some of the biggest artists in the game, from Mary J. Blige to Britney Spears. By now everyone pretty much knows who Ryan Leslie is, and if you haven’t your are just late. We have been following this man’s career since his start in the music industry while working with Cassie, and you can tell that music is something that he is truly passionate about and it is something he loves.

In our second interview with him, we followed up to see what’s new in his world and learn some more about his latest album “Transition”. He’s pretty much an open book, and very easy to talk to.

“I mean being in the position that I’m in, I don’t really have to do much to get a girl’s attention. I don’t really have to work that hard. But to keep their attention is when you have to work hard.” – Ryan Leslie

ATF: So how is it having an album out during this tough time in the music industry?

Ryan Leslie: It feels good because it’s so much out right now. So as an entertainer its fun to fight for that attention.

ATF: So you album seems to be about a transition through a relationship. What made you want to get so personal and write about that?

RL: Well I write about everything that goes on in my life, that is my blessing and my curse. I’m the type of artist that what goes on in my life inspires me to write.

ATF: it seems like the media is really involved in your personal life. Do you think because you get so personal with your lyrics and music that encourages the medias attention?

RL: yeah I do feel that it encourages them. It’s up to us as artist to say when though. I’m pretty open I must say.

ATF: So what are some of your most personal songs on the album?

RL: I really can’t stand doing that because the album is a body of work. I want it to be enjoyed that way.

ATF: Now I attended your listening session and you went a different route from most artists. You didn’t just play the album and receive feedback. You actually introduced each song and played for us. What made you want to be so different?

RL: Well I like to do things differently. Being an entertainer you want to engage your audience and I wanted to touch the audience in away they probably never been before. So they would know more about what I have to offer.

ATF: One of my favorite songs off the album is “Zodiac”, tell our readers how you came with such a dope record. What was the inspiration behind it?

RL: Well musically I had been working with my band doing a lot of live shows and I wanted to capture that element on the recording. Actually while I was on tour, I was listening to a lot of Rick James and watching his live performances, so you kind of hear that influence in the record. And from a lyrical stand point, I’d actually gone out to dinner with an actress who was into the zodiac stuff. It was just natural that it wove it’s way into the record.

ATF: Okay since you like talking about relationships and stuff, tell our readers what is it like dating Ryan Leslie.

RL: Everything I do is intense! If I’m pursuing a girl I try to do everything I can to show that I’m interested. This album is a clear example of the lengths that I would go to express the way I feel. You can expect spending time together in different location and at nice restaurants, because we all gotta eat. I also bring you into my world, like coming to my rehearsals and studio sessions. That’s just a little taste of dating Ryan Leslie.

ATF: So what is the most outrageous thing you have done to get a girls attention?

RL: I mean being in the position that I’m in, I don’t really have to do much to get a girl attention. I don’t really have to work that hard. But to keep their attention is when you have to work hard. I don’t want to say the things I do and cheapen them, but I have gone to some great lengths to keep a girls attention.

Ryan Leslie On Working With …

Fabolous: Working with Fab is always good. He always has a clear creative and musical vision. I always know it’s gonna work before we even get into the studio.

Keri Hilson: Working with Keri was really spontaneous. She is a great talent and has really good ideas. I really look forward to working with her again.

Cassie: Working with Cassie that early in her career was incredible because our voices were like the same voice. So that’s what I think made the records really special. Since then she has really spread her wings. She is exploring independently looking for that new messaging that she wants to give off to the world. I just wish her everything it takes for her to be happy. Working with her in those early stages was really magical.

ATF: So what do you got coming up next for the world?

RL: Well I got a lot coming. Be on the look out for me on Mary J. Blige & Rick Ross new albums. If we can get are schedules together I might be on Usher new album. I’m also on Chris Brown’s new album. In 2010, I will be releasing a new album entitled “LES Is More”.

The self proclaimed “King of NYC”, Sean “Diddy” Combs took over New York City last night for his 40th Birthday Party, and held his birthday celebration at The Grand Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. If you didn’t know, Diddy knows how to throw a party, and everybody and their mama was there. The event was also hosted by Ciroc Vodka, of course.

This party was talked about so much it became a trending topic on Twitter (#outsidediddyparty). Last night was a little reunion as well, as Diddy and Lil’ Kim kissed and made up. The Queen Bee showed up to the party looking a hot mess of course. We guess that her recent photo shoot was just that a photo shoot, not a new look.

Fabulous Friday Music Review: Keri Hilson, Whitney Hosuton, Cassie + More

Its Friday and we would like to give you some of our favorite videos and new music that hit the internet this week. From Keri Hilson to Cassie. This week gave a variety of music. The music game is finally turning around and improving. The Blue Print 3 has overshadowed most music this week, but we got you covered.

Cassie is gearing up to release her new album, Electro Love, on November 24th. Cassie new style is geared toward the dance music route with this new album and it really works for her. The only thing is that she really can’t dance. This track “Can You Feel Me” is going to be huge overseas and in the white gay clubs we just know it. If these few lines ain’t about Diddy shoot us now…

Cassie – Can You Feel Me

Keri Hilson has dropped a new single and video. The track “Slow Dance” was one of our favorite records off her debut album. Keri Hilson is really under-rated, but that whole Beyonce/Ciara beef really overshadowed her project. The video has cameos from Chris Brown, Omarion, Polow Da Don, and Monica. Keri most of the video is getting dressed to go out and grinding on walls, which is pretty lame. She is wearing the same snake skin dress Amber Rose recently wore, but keri still does it justice. Let us know what you think, we are pretty up in the air with this one.

Whitney Houston has finally release a video for her wack song, I Look To You, off her tired album with the same name. Whitney Houston is legendary, but this video is a FAIL. The song is just the pits to us, the video doesn’t help the cause either. Bye Girl!

We forgot all about Leona Lewis after Bleeding Love, but the girl is coming back with another album. The first single off that said album is “Happy” We aren’t the biggest fans of Leona, but the chick can blow. Her vocals are amazing on the song. Who is Leona Lewis audience? She isn’t really R&B or Pop, she is just all over the place to us. Our favorite track from her is “I’m You” off her first album, which was written and produced by Ne-Yo. they really need to team up again.

We’ve seen the preview to Dirty Money’s first single, “Angels” all over the net, well this week was the premiere of the video in it’s entirety. We look forward to seeing how far Dirty Money will go, hopefully they won’t vanish into thin air like Total.

Okay, Cassie! Not Bad, Not Bad at All!

Okay, Cassie’s ‘do is somewhat starting to grow on us, mainly because it seems as though she’s gotten a bit more comfortable with it and has learned how to style it. Its amazing what a little styling gel and a curling iron can do.

She and Diddy, along with fashion designer, Zac Posen, hit up the “The September Issue” premiere after party at The Museum of Modern Art last night. (Guess Diddy didn’t invite Dawn to tag along as well, because she was busy.)

If you haven’t heard, “The September Issue” is a film that takes an exclusive, behind the scenes look into the life of Anna Wintour, the legendary editor in chief of Vogue Magazine. (Somewhat like a real life Devil Wears Prada, if you will.) For obvious reasons, anyone who’s anybody in fashion in New York was probably at the film screening last night.

Cassie hit us with the her new single, “Stamina“. Diddy is still rocking hard with these 80 Retro beats! We feel like throwing on our neon green leggings and a head band when we hear Stamina!

New York natives, Punchlyne and Fokis, teamed up with Teddy Roxpin (if this name sounds familiar, he’s also the producer of Asher Roth’s “Lark on my Go Kart“) and dropped a pretty hot track, “We Came to Rock“. Check out their myspace for more music here.

Jermaine Dupri and behind the scenes writer, Johnta Austin, got on Drake’s “So Successful” beat and as a result, released “SO SO Successful” . We are waiting for Johnta Austin to get his big break!

FAB female, Mitsue, has definitely been getting a buzz on the internet with her fly stlye and catchy lyrics over Dj Webstar’s “Dancing on Me“.

New York’s Finest Females Lil Kim and Teyana Taylor teamed up with Keri Hilson and released a remix to “Turn My Swag On“. Definitely gotta bump this in the car on your way to the club with the ladies!

Diddy Causes a Scene in Central Park After Q-Tip Concert

Diddy was spotted yesterday dancing on stage at Q-Tip’s Central Park Summerstage concert. When the concert ended, he was seen leaving the park with Dawn Richard & Kaleena (Who are in his new group, Dirty Money), and his “girlfriend”, Cassie.

Watch him as he causes quite the stir, as only Diddy knows how, and plays some of his tracks off of his new album, Last Train to Paris. This man is a hot mess, but he’s so entertaining! (Why does Cassie look like she’s always trying to hide, though?)

Cassie Steals the Show @ Louis Vuitton Event

Last night, Cassie attended the Louis Vuitton Celebration The 40th Anniversary Of The Lunar Landing rocking an eye catching outfit and a remixed version of her new haircut. Say what you want about her, she definitely knows how to stand out in a crowd!

There were other beautiful, fabulous females there, including Estelle, a pregnant Adriana Lima and countless models, but Miss Cassie Ventura was the most photographed of them all, and with reason. She my not be as famous as the other ladies, but she knows what she’s doing.

The question still remains, are we feeling Cassie’s look last night, or do you think she’s trying too hard to make a statement? Regardless, it doesn’t look as though she’s giving up the new cut any time soon.

“The Wendy Williams Show” will return to your TV screens on July 13, 2009! Yes, like it or not, Wendy is back!

“The talk show, which will air live at 10 a.m. EST in major markets such as New York, comes with a built-in fan base after a six-week test airing in four cities last July. The show quickly found an audience in New York and Los Angeles, where it posted 333% and 29% ratings gains, respectively, among women 25 to 54 in its time slot after airing against repeats of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” It will also air on BET during same-day repeats at 11 p.m. EST.”
